Was the way Duguid treated McLean acceptable? Why do you think he treated him this way?
2Sergeirocks
Duguid is the character we're going to love to hate. He comes across as simply obnoxious. Poor people skills generally, not just with McLean. Although the remarks he makes to Tony do come across as personal - perhaps Tony comes from money and Duguid is envious of his background?

Not sure Tony comes from money. His parents died when he was 4 unless his grandmother has money.
Haven't finish the reading yet - only halfway done.
Duguid was very nasty to McLean. We'll have to keep our eyes on that one!

He's a very stereotypical character in police procedurals. I guess that's because they are so common. Hopefully McLean can stay out of his way. I got the impression they worked together in the past and McLean got a promotion from it.

He is MacLean's "Steele" from the Stuart MacBride novels. Duguid is rude and obnoxious to everyone. There does seem to be one in every police procedural book we read.

The book did seem to indicate McLean was from money given the area in which he lived, so there does seem to be some jealousy in place. Duguid is a reprehensible character but seems to save most of his vitriol for McLean. Perhaps we should boo every time he appears!

He seems to be a bully and generally obnoxious - but I'll reserve judgement until we see what kind of cop he is. I also think that Tony used to work with him as his sergeant so Dagwood sees him as a definite subordinate and doesn't give him the respect that his title deserves.

I agree with all of you on your assessment of Duguid. I suspect he's both jealous of McLean's wealthy upbringing and his skill as a police officer. I also got the impression they worked together in the past and McLean bested him. I believe Duguid thinks McLean moved up through the ranks too quickly.

I agree with bits of all of you, he's obnoxious, he seems to have some sort of issue with McLean, but he bullies everyone so it seems he's just "that guy". It does seem that every station seems to have one.
