Why break into a house and steal something from the safe, when there were paintings on the wall which would be worth six figure sums? Any thoughts?

This part of the plot is puzzling me...

Yes, I was puzzled about that too.

Perhaps what was taken from the safe would be easier to sell than a painting or it could have some sentimental value to the the person that took it and money isn't the motive behind the taking it.

Is there something in the safe that links to the murders? It doesn't seem as if they are stealing for money. Are these people responsible for the death of the woman. Admittedly a wild guess.

>6 Andrew-theQM: that is actually what I was wondering given the preliminary "theory" we got later in this section. A group of school friends decades ago that took things too far?

>6 Andrew-theQM: and >7 bhabeck: I also have that theory running around in the back of my mind.
I believe the thief was looking for something specific that he/she knew was in the safe.

Didn't they say that jewelry was the only thing missing from the safe? Also, so far, isn't it the same security company they've been noting? I don't know, so far I can't come up with any real reason other than there must be something specific that's being targeted, but heck if I know what.

>9 Jen_Bartels: If what was stolen was something of personal value, the owner might not want to talk about it. Especially if it has something to do with another crime.

I think these break ins are targeted and personal. Taking along money or jewelry which is easy to sell would be a bonus. Canvases are rather more difficult to lug around and have a much more specialized clientele.
