What is your first impression of the book and the author's style?

A very decent writer; good, readable style - shame about the level of gore: much more than I usually like in my books.
If it hadn't been a group read, I think I'd have given up there and then - which would have been a pity because I'm enjoying the story now (gory descriptions notwithstanding...).
I like the group of characters this author has assembled.

I like it so far. Good writing, interesting characters, evocative setting. I usually skim the gory parts so I hope I don't miss anything.

I get good feelings from this author that he is talented and I'm glad that Stuart MacBride encouraged him to switch genres.

I really like his writing style. It's easy to read and you are speaking to the "Gore Queen" so I don't mind it. I'll have to find one of his fantasy's and see how it compares.

Very readable and enjoyable, but the level of gore is not necessary. Hope he maintains this level of interesting storyline and characters. I also love anything set in Scotland and especially Edinburgh.

Also so many questions I could have generated from this section!

I like the writing. The characters are interesting.

>5 Carol420: same here re gore...not that big of an issue for me

I enjoy his writing and have connected with a number of his characters. (even the "love to hate" Duguid).
I can certainly do without the gore--I'm averse to blood and guts. Like Lynda--I skim through those sections rather quickly.

Really enjoying the writing style and the characters we've been able to get to know. The gore doesn't bother me really, which will probably help if we're right and at least 5 more people have to be killed.

>3 Olivermagnus: said it all. I would appreciate a little less gore, but these days it seems a necessity...
