Why was Lawson so loathe to believe or investigate Macfadyen for the murders?

Because MacFadyen was helping Lawson in his quest to kill all of the original suspects.

I don't think he could afford to have MacFadyen in the limelight. He might reveal how much he knows about Lawson.

He could bring the attention onto Lawson so better not to follow that up.

I thought it was because he'd been slowplaying the investigation so far and if there was actually someone who had an interest in the case, he'd have to take it more seriously
