My currently reading — subject to change as things become available at public library waitlist (read first so as to not torment readers still waiting) or shinier things release like some of the 72 new releases in series out next Tuesday:
My reading progresses will likely be cross posted from booklikes (http://donealrice.booklikes.com) but hopefully there will be more discussions here on LibraryThing. (Despite join date, I'm just now trying to use LT more.)

Read 41% of Frozen Tides by Morgan Rhodes, #4 in Falling Kingdoms series:

Not much new happening. I mean, same writing, stories and characters but really the story hasn't moved along much.

I don't mind the melodrama that pervades the series — it's actually part of the appeal — but, one of my least favorite tropes has appeared. The trope where one main character has years of knowing someone is a creep plus details that clearly another main character (and supposed love interest) needs to know. Do they speak up while creep ingratiates into love interest's life? Nope.

Foreshadowing a probable if-only-we-had-talked in the ending.

Welcome!

And a comment/question: You may wish to review your LT books. It appears that you may have imported some items more that once. Unless you really have four copies of The Science Fiction Weight-Loss Book!

Frozen Tides by Morgan Rhodes

Picking up as more of the players converge.  Still plenty of melodrama.

>5 suitable1: I know my book catalog is in bad shape from too many emergency imports as other sites closed down or changed to unacceptable policies.

It's going to take me a while to clean up. I'm just now exploring LT beyond backing book catalogs up to a site that allows you to backup book data.

I'm liking this group (and feel welcome) -- but, honestly the most basic things are hard to figure out here. Even things like how to put a book as currently reading and reading progress updates.

I'll invest more time editing my book library here once I have my bearings.

>5 suitable1: I don’t think formal progress updates are possible here, not like what you’re used to on GR and BL, but I could be wrong.

I don’t know if there’s a better way, but this is how I would manually put a book in currently reading status:

1. First, the book has to already be in your library, if it isn't already. On LT, you can't just go to a work page and click a "Currently Reading" button. If it isn't in your library already, you first have to add the book through the "Add Books" option. You can also use the "Add to Your Books" button on the work page, but all that really does is take you to the "Add Books" option and pre-search for the same title. So, if you have to search for the book anyway (as opposed to already being on the work page because you followed a link), then you might as well just go to "Add Books" from the beginning and do your search there.

2. Once the book is in your library, go to that book’s page and click “Edit your book” from the menu bar on the left. (If you just finished adding the book, you can get to the book page from the screen you're already on.)

3. Click the “show all” button under “Collections”.

4. Your list of Collections will expand and you can now set it to “Currently Reading”.

I find that, if I’m manually adding a book for the first time, it sets it to “Currently Reading” by default. I would have sworn it didn’t used to do that, so I’m not sure if I changed a setting somewhere or if I’m misremembering.

>9 Spurts: Hi Debbie & welcome to LT!

>10 YouKneeK: has pretty much covered it. I would add 2 small clarifications...

1. On the 'Add Books' page, set your tags and collections before running the search. Whatever is active at the time of the search is what seems to 'stick' to the book you click on in the results.

2. Regarding the 'Currently Reading' default; I'm pretty sure the Collections setting remembers your choices from the previous search. So, each time you change one (or more) of them, it will 'stick' for next time. Again, I'm pretty sure it only sticks if you set it before clicking on the search button.

On the other hand, I'm not an LT expert so maybe there is a setting somewhere that overrides the behaviors I'm outlining. This place has a LOT of settings! ;)

HTH!

I do love the ease of Touchstones feature here.

Read 73% of Frozen Tides by Morgan Rhodes:

And now finally some characters start revealing stuff they should have told their so-called allies way before now. Well, in one case confirming when discovered.

Now I expect will really be picking up.

Yeah, I know. If everything resolved or revealed too quickly, wouldn't make a novel length story.

Oh, and more deaths of loved ones of course.

>14 Spurts: Psst! A quiet word to the wise: please check the results EVERY time you use touchstones. Distressingly often, they point to wrong books, often bizarrely wrong ones. For example, recently @pgmcc and I were chattering about This is not the end of the Book, and the touchstone insistently pointed (still does) to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban!

Frozen Tides: A Falling Kingdoms Novel - Morgan Rhodes
So everyone is mistrusting each other, misunderstandings abound, paranoid (and inaccurate) conspiracy theories.

None of the core characters have died in this chunk of the book, but seems like several deaths are looming.

Aah! The melodrama.

The King of Blood has just returned to his kingdom — after uncharacteristically revealing a bit of his own past melodrama — so maybe the rebels will get it together to try and do something other than suspect each other. Or not; possibly just building up,to next back (not likely to be an actual cliffhanger based on previous books in series).

I still like these books. Seems like this one has spent less time on story than on trying to wallow in the characters having both good/bad elements (and excuses because of what they've been through and lost). Not necessarily a negative except that they are starting to all be alike except for names and current injuries. I guess it's a positive that the females and males all seem alike.

Finished Frozen Tides by Morgan Rhodes and Legacy of Honor by Linda Hilton (KOLL borrow).

In the process of writing a review for Frozen Tides .

I enjoyed historical romance Legacy of Honor but won't be reviewing (not much to say beyond excellent heroine, excellent story and even an interesting time setting). A bit awkward to review because I'm social online with the author on a lot of book sites which is not a hard and fast rule for me except in Linda's case I do consider her a cnnection/friend where it's a gray area if it's a reader review or a review from someone with a connection/bias. Just a weird thing based on how I feel that hopefully won't drive away all authors-participating-also-as-readers from making connections (there are only a handful of authors known only online I feel that way/bias about).

2% into Cast in Flight by Michelle Sagara #12 in Chronicles of Elantra series:

I'm sure I'm headed into being totally immersed in this book like the previous 11 books of series -- even knowing I'll likely finish and look around thinking damn series took another turn/twist/new-direction rather than getting on with it.  *sigh* somehow still addicted.

Mar 28, 2017, 9:18 am

>30 Spurts: & >32 SylviaC: You can highlight on the kindle, but it only lets you share what you highlighted with a few social sites. And even then what you are sharing is a link to the passage on an Amazon page. (Unless it's really short, and then the whole thing shows.) A photo is a quick way to bypass that.

>35 clamairy: At one point I managed to do some cut-and-paste on the iPad, but that might have been with Overdrive. And I seldom read books on the iPad.

38Spurts
Edited: Mar 28, 2017, 12:48 pm

>35 clamairy: Easier for me to snap a photo (or if on a backlit device like iPad a screenshot). Blockquote features are different appearance or absent on some book sites where the photo is hopefully clearly from ebook (I try not to completely crop out the ereader frame).

You can cut and post from actual kindle devices. You have to highlight and then access your notes file either by connecting the device by USB cable to a computer or syncing highlights to the kindle app on that computer (again have to go into the file).

The goodreads integration shares highlights as quotes where you can go there to copy/paste (except I seldom actually want my highlights to add to quotes as opposed to just including in reviews/posts).

Nook and overdrive apps on devices do let you cut/paste.

Finished Cast in Flight.

Excellent. Review to follow (I now "owe" two reviews).

Still finding it amusing at front of book reading all the blurbs about how it will appeal to romance readers. I'm sure that's because it's published under Luna imprint (Harlequin/Harper-Collins owned) -- but there's no romance or sex for the main characters, not even an awkward date or temptation unless totally missed it the last twelve books.

I just got notified I won early review copy of Rebel Lost by Mindy Klasky so adding the first book of that series, Rebel Flight to the queue.

Her Glasswright's Apprentice series is an all time fantasy genre favorite for me -- so, I have high hopes!

I've read 10% of Thief's Covenant by Ari Marmell #1 in Widdershins series.

One minute I'm approaching with open mind a fantasy genre book with a trope -- poor, underprivileged orphan street kid -- that might be a really good or a truly abysmal book, some brief fictional name dropping that wasn't interesting, then *blink* I'm immersed.

This is good.
