I've read one or two over the years, but can't remember much about them.
I want to see if this Morse resembles the TV series Morse, played by John Thaw. I want to taste the flavour of Oxford - no pressure Mr. Dexter (dec'd).

I've read all - or at least most, but that was several years ago.
I'm hoping I can find my book (otherwise, get my Kindle charged up!) and that I can solve the mystery before Morse does.

I have never read any of the books or seen the TV show, so I'm looking forward to my first glimpse of Morse.

I've never read any of the books or seen the tv series either, so this character and author are all new to me.

I started the book yesterday while I was waiting for an appointment and found it a bit of a challenge. I don't know if it was the style or simply some of the terms being used...it's interesting but I found I was reading slower than usual. I might need Andrew and Sergei to provide some "translation"

I haven't read any Morse before, neither have I seen any of the series. I have however watched quite a bit of the Lewis series. Nice setting...

>6 bhabeck: Let us know any words or terms you need help with Brenda.

Previously in this order I've read :
Death is My Neighbour Book 12
The Wench is Dead Book 8
The Daughters of Cain Book 11
Last Seen Wearing Book 2

I'm interested to see how the character is introduced and how this compares with the TV character. Absolutely loved the Morse TV programme.

I've read almost all of the Morse books and I've seen every season of the TV series. I will have to say that I liked the TV series more but I think it was because I had already pictured Morse in my mind and John Thaw fit that picture perfectly...rather like Brenda Blethyn being the perfect Vera. The Last Bus to Woodstock was one that I never found so I'm looking forward to seeing how Endeavor Morse started out. I hope Detective Lewis starts out with him in this book. Poor Lewis...he's Morse's Joe Ashworth:)
>9 Andrew-theQM: Glad to see that you RIO:) Eadie must be have a heart attack. We'll send her brownies...that should help.

>11 Carol420: brownies would surely help but a strawberry 🍓 shortcake would really make me feel better!
Never read Colin Dexter or watched the TV Morse. I'm looking forward to remedy that!

>6 bhabeck: Dexter has what I'd call 'a rather intellectual style', which gives me cause, like you, to pause and think over what he is saying. I enjoy this challenge, simply because I love the written word, :).
Dexter was a very intelligent man and loved doing cryptic crosswords, hence Morse's predilection. Apparently, his two main characters were named after Sir Jeremy Morse and Mrs B. Lewis (real name Dorothy Taylor), both longstanding compilers of crosswords for The Observer newspaper.

>13 Sergeirocks: Interesting info, Sergei. Thank you for that. My Mother's name is Dorothy and she constantly has a crossword puzzle going. Maybe all Dorthy's are puzzle freaks:)
>12 EadieB: We can get you strawberry shortcake. No problem.

>14 Carol420: I love puzzles too! My favorite thing to do I Sudoku!

I've never read any of the books or seen the series, however. Endeavour has been sitting in my Amazon Video watch list for some time.
I started to get worried I wouldn't get the book in time. I am borrowing it from the library and for more than one week the status was listed as: In Transit. Makes you wonder how far it had to travel. Fortunately it arrived yesterday!

>16 bluebird_: Yey! Great news, nothing worse than that phrase in transit!
>13 Sergeirocks: Thanks for that information Sergei. I agree about him being an intelligent man and him and John Thaw who played Morse developed a great friendship. John Thaw is Morse, have watched all the tv programmes of the original series many times and loved them. John Thaw was a great actor and one of my favourites. Taken from us too early!
>11 Carol420: Lewis of course eventually got his own series when he was the one in charge and this ran for many years, another great series! Very erratic reading order for this series, definitely didn't let the side down. :)
For those who don't know the series Endeavour is about Morse's early years.

>15 EadieB: >18 Sergeirocks: >19 sushicat: If it's Sudoku don't we need nine people to like it! 😊 Amazing how sudoku took off, and of course because it's numbers translates in every language and crosses all borders!

Given that I have been working late (salary negotiations) the past few nights and have four months of homework assignments due in two days, I may be a tad late in my reading. I'm not looking at any of the discussions until I get to that chapter.
22Andrew-theQM
We will discuss it with you whenever you get to it Hope. 😊
23EadieB
>21 Hope_H: I hope they decide to give Andrew a raise!
24Carol420
>23 EadieB: We've already had the "Andrew's raise" discussion and decided that he was worth more than we could afford. We also tought that maybe he wouldn't realize that he wasn't even getting paid. So far so good.
