Where are we up to in the series?

What are you hoping for from this book?

The Crucifix Killer – Book #1

An isolated and grisly crime scene gets a whole lot worse for LAPD Homicide Detective Robert Hunter when a strange double-cross is found on the body of a sadistically tortured murder victim.

It’s the same cross that was the signature of the infamous, and executed, “Crucifix Killer”; a signature that had never been publicly revealed.

When we meet Robert Hunter we find a determined cop but a tormented individual.
He is portrayed as a prodigy whose PhD thesis written at the age of 24, became a training manual for the FBI.

His torment comes from mistakes that he made in the past after having to yield to the pressure to find the killer thus helping convict an innocent man for killing his wife and then discovering after the innocent man commits suicide that another man was responsible

Hunter and his rookie partner Carlos Garcia are now charged with tracking down a vicious killer whose actions bring the past back and raises some disturbing questions about the original investigation, arrest, and execution.

Are they now facing a copycat with intimate knowledge of those earlier killings? Did the police make a massive mistake, allowing the real killer to remain at large and kill again and again while an innocent man was executed?

Chris Carter does a great job of showing the effects of a tough investigation on those involved. The new case puts extra pressure on Hunter…that already has one dead partner and doesn’t want another one.

Carlos Garcia struggles to keep the required balance between his demanding new job and his relationship with his wife.

As a group there were 9 participants.

We gave this book a very high star rating…. ranking it in the levels with Raven Black and Ice Hunt…which also received 4.58 overall ratings.

Individually there were 4 – 5 star ratings; 2 – 4.5 star ratings; 2 – 4 star ratings; & 1 - 4.2 star rating for an overall average rating of 4.58

Comments from the participants were as follows:

"I hope Carter is always so sharing in his books - as a reader, being fed with so many clues made me feel 'involved', not just a bystander. So many authors leave me feeling excluded."

"Absolutely a tremendously absorbing story. Great characters. Love Robert and Garcia and like that Carter took a character that would usually be despised and mistrusted and made him likable."

"The characters, the great suspense, I haven't been this hooked on a book in a long time!"

"The totally shocking surprises and twists. Kept us on the edge of our seat and kept us guessing all the way through. Interesting characters."

The Executioner by Chris Carter
Robert Hunter series Book #2

The Executioner doesn't kill at random. He knows his victims well. He makes sure they meet their end in the most terrifying way.

He knows their worst fears and literally scares them to death. He takes his time to maximize their pain and suffering and tortures them until they die a slow painful death.

Each victim is numbered in blood, indicating that the killer is following a list of intended victims.

Under the supervision of Barbara Blake, the new captain, Hunter and Garcia are pressed into finding this killer as quickly as possible before he strikes again but this proves to be a very difficult task with many false leads and dead ends.

The questions that they must answer to end the killing are…Who is The Executioner? Why is he killing these people? How is he choosing his victims? Is there a connection? How many will he kill? Who is next on his list?

The entire series is very authentic but rather on the side of gruesome. IT IS NOT for the faint of heart or the weak of stomach.

One of things that makes this series so successful is the relationship between Hunter and his partner, Garcia.

As a group we numbered 5 participants…
Overall Rating: 4.55... nearly as high as the first but with less participants than the first.

Some comments from the participants:

"This series is not for the faint of heart or those with a weak stomach."

" All the chapters are short, so don't let the 143 chapters be a turn off. Each and every one has a cliffhanger ending that will drive you on to the next and the next and the next."

"Great writing and exciting plot. Interesting characters and a very surprise ending"

"I liked the characters and the plot was phenomenally conceived."

"It was a decent story, well written. The author kept the story moving along, no time to get bored."

"Pacing, plotting, characters, the abundance of clues (even if we picked up on the wrong ones), the whole feel of the books. Very good books overall despite the grittiness"
