Has anyone ever tried it? I bought my partner this little kit for his stocking at Christmas: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toyday-Ginger-Beer-Making-Kit/dp/B000H6QSLW

(more because I liked the box than for any other reason!)

I've never tried it (or even heard of such a kit), but I would love to hear what your partner thinks of the finished product.

And yes, the box is unbelievably cute :-)

My husband made some before we were married - not out of a kit. Tasted fab but fermented in the bottles and exploded all over the inside of a fridge and also the ones he gave his then-girlfriend exploded in her dorm room. Thankfully, she was not hurt.

This book, due to be published in July, looks promising. I read the author's blog and pre-ordered it because it has recipes related to lots of my favourite books.

I tried making it about ten years ago, using Alison Holst's recipe. It turned out OK. We had family friends who made really good Ginger Beer when i was younger.

We made it a lot when I was a kid - had a starter bug that we shared with a friend so one of us always had a batch on the go. No major problems although I think we had the occasional explosion. They were kept on the back step so no major damage *g*

I have a supposedly reliable recipe here http://home.clear.net.nz/pages/anya/nzrecipe.html#gbeer

but no guarantees it works as it isn't one I've tried.

I keep thinking it might be fun to do in Summer with guides / scouts and take it on a camp - but then i imagine the bottles exploding in cars during transportation. The only thinhg worse than a wet tent would be a wet / sticky one *chuckle*
