Thanks to the long weekend, I've already done a fair bit of reading this month! I finished Georgette Heyer's Penhallow, an uncharacteristically depressing book, and then read Rebel Mechanics by Shanna Swendson, a fun steampunk novel. Now I'm almost through a reread of Heyer's The Quiet Gentleman, which is the perfect antidote to Penhallow! So, what are you reading this month?
2LisaMorr
I started Speaker for the Dead, the second book in Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game series.

Right now I am enjoying listening to Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day narrated by Frances McDormand. I am also revisiting an author that I discovered and read in my teens by re-reading Jubilee Trail by Gwen Bristow. I am shortly on my way out to the library where I have a few books waiting for me to pick up and will probably start The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey by Rinker Buck later on this afternoon.
4Jackie_K
I am continuing to read Long Walk to Freedom (begun in June, roughly a chapter a day so I expect to finish some time in October), and have also started Red Rosa and A Little Princess for this month's CATWoman, A People's History of London and a re-read (after a very long time) of A Time of Gifts. That should keep me going for most of the month.
5rabbitprincess
Finally finished my first book of the month: The Blackhouse, by Peter May. Now reading The Right to Be Cold, by Sheila Watt-Cloutier.

>3 DeltaQueen50: I loved Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Judy -- hope you enjoy it as well!

I've finished The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules by Catharine Ingelman-Suudberg and decided to read Running Blind by Lee Child next.

I'm going to be concentrating on children's lit this month, both for the CATWoman and RandomCAT challenges. I'm currently reading Pioneer Girl Perspectives: Exploring Laura Ingalls Wilder, edited by Nancy Tystad Koupal. The essays in this book, each written by experts in the field, are very interesting so far. Several of them have very different opinions about Rose Wilder Lane, Laura's daughter, and how much of a role she played in the publication of her mother's books.
I'm planning to reread as many of the Little House books as I can this month. However, I might have only about three weeks since I'm having cataract surgery on the 20th, and don't know how soon after that I will feel comfortable reading.

>6 christina_reads: Christina, I am really enjoying Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day the audio is excellent. My only complaint is that it is too short!
10cbl_tn
I just finished Parrot and Olivier in America by Peter Carey. I started it last month for the Miles Franklin award but I wasn't able to finish it before the end of the month. Conveniently, it also made the Booker shortlist so it fits this month, too! I'm just starting Autumn by Ali Smith from this year's Booker longlist.
11dudes22
I'm going to start Possession by A.S. Byatt which is my awards CAT book for this month.
12sturlington
I am in a bit of a reading slump. I'm reading The Orphan Master's Son, which I am enjoying, but I don't seem to make much progress on it.
13christina_reads
I'm reading Nicola Upson's An Expert in Murder. So far so good, but I doubt it will be a keeper for me.
14LittleTaiko
Finished Glass Houses by Louise Penny and now need to get back to reading Nurse and Spy in the Union Army, The Nakano Thrift Shop, Fer-de-Lance, and Away with Words.
16rabbitprincess
Preparing to start The Gone-Away World, by Nick Harkaway.
17cbl_tn
I'm just starting Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell for the AwardsCAT.
18leslie.98
I am reading Under the Volcano for the AlphaKIT & my personal challenge to read from the Guardian's 1000 novels list.
19DeltaQueen50
I am currently reading Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu, a children's story based on the fairytale The Snow Queen. I am also just about to start Troubles by J.G. Farrell
20christina_reads
I've just started The Miller's Dance, book 9 in the Poldark saga. I can't believe I've only got a few more books left in this series!
21sturlington
I have started The Wonder by Emma Donoghue.
22VivienneR
I'm currently reading Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. I'm sorry to say I've never heard of Zamperini before so the story is completely new to me.
23whitewavedarling
Mostly due to having so many distractions, my reads seem to be going more slowly than usual. I finished a few quick ones, but I'm currently reading All the Wrong Places: Adrift in the Politics of the Pacific Rim (nf for CultureCat), No Ordinary Heroes (nf CultureCat read from August that I had to put down for a while because of Harvey and Irma), Nevernight (Japanese steampunk), and Long Black Veil (a novel I started last night because I didn't have the energy for the other reads).
I'm pretty sure I'll finish all of them this month, with the possible exception of Nevernight, but I'm not sure how much else I'll fit in.

I'm pushing my way through Two Years Before the Mast to ensure that I finish it for this month's RandomCAT.

I'm continuing my process of finishing books, or at least picking up and reading a few more chapters, that involves my 45 book challenge and getting through some of these piles!
Hyperion by Dan Simmons is one I'm currently reading, along with a few more chapters of The Stargazing Year in honor of last month's amazing eclipse.
I also need to finish Song of Taliesin by John Matthews; even though I brought it as reading material to read aloud at our campsite, there was far too much going on to read more than a few stories from it. But they lent an air of the sacred so that was enough.
Finished Hard Times for a F2F book group and reading A Storm of Swords after a two-year hiatus from Martin's world.

>24 rabbitprincess: lol! That sounds like the way I am trying to tackle The Guermantes Way (also for this month's RandomCAT as well as a personal challenge).
I am also reading The English Patient for this month's AwardCAT - I thought I had read this before but it turns out I have just seen the movie.

I just finished Wenjack by Joseph Boyden which was very well done but sad. I am enjoying the The Sittaford Mystery by Agatha Christie and have Broken Jewel by David L. Robbins ready to start later on this evening.

>26 leslie.98: Turns out a seven-hour plane ride is a very good push for finishing books! Also got myself caught up with my shared read of The Gone-Away World, which I'm reading with my cousin.
29VivienneR
I'm nearly finished The Likeness by Tana French. Excellent, but I enjoyed Faithful Place more. I hardly recognized Frank Mackey in this one.
Just finished The Baker's Secret by Stephen P. Kiernan, which was outstanding. A different type of book about the French Resistance and the D-Day landing.
Many thanks to @mysterymax for the book bullet.

My current bus book is Agatha Christie's Murder in the Making, by John Curran. It's making me want to go on an Agatha Christie binge!

I realized I haven't been to this thread in a while. Since then, I've abandoned Possession by A.S. Byatt; I may get to it sometime, but this wasn't the time. Then I started and abandoned The Gathering by Anne Enright; same kind of thing. So I decided on a Jack Reacher book which I find keeps my attention without requiring a lot of thought. And then I followed it with another.
32LisaMorr
Finished Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card which was great and I'm about halfway through The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan.
>28 rabbitprincess: Long plane flights are great for reading! I have a 12-hr flight tomorrow and no doubt I'll sleep some (2:30am pick-up at the hotel tomorrow - ugh), but hope to finish The Great Hunt and get started on A Spool of Blue Thread for the AwardCAT.

I started The Devil in Silver by Victor Lavalle.

I finished The Miller's Dance (good as always), read Carrie Pilby by Caren Lissner (fine but nothing special), and have now started A Poison Dark and Drowning by Jessica Cluess (good so far!). A productive reading weekend!
36leslie.98
I have finished The Swiss Family Robinson and The Unbearable Bassington, two very different classics!
37DeltaQueen50
I'm finishing off the month with The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan and Ophelia by Lisa Klein, a YA reworking of Hamlet.
38dudes22
I finished Safe House by Nicci French which wasn't quite as good as I expected.
39rabbitprincess
>32 LisaMorr: I am envious of your ability to sleep on planes. I can't do it. Thus I end up being awake for about 30 hours straight when travelling to the UK (on the overnight flights).
Currently reading the last in the Brothers of Gwynedd quartet: Afterglow and Nightfall, by Edith Pargeter. Exciting to read this after having been to Wales!

Recently I reread Kristan Higgins's Too Good to Be True, a delightful contemporary romance. Then I turned to a more old-fashioned romance, The Best Man by Grace Livingston Hill, which was fine but perhaps too dated for my taste. Now I've begun J. Jefferson Farjeon's The Z Murders, which I'm enjoying so far!
42rabbitprincess
>41 christina_reads: The Z Murders was bananas, but in a fun way for me :)
Currently reading Head of Drama, the memoir of Sydney Newman, aka the man who created Doctor Who. He was Canadian!

>39 rabbitprincess: Hi RP! Well, I'm not that great at it - I got some sleep, but I'm pretty much up every hour anyway, and it's never very comfortable, and I'm always pretty sore... My boss takes the overnight flights from Houston to the UK and sleeps the night through and goes right into the office. I can't do that...
