"Combined Operations in the Civil War" by Rowena Reed has pertinent chapters on the clearing of the Mississippi, and also interesting comparisons to east coast operations. a place to start, without some of the chest-thumping to be found elsewhere.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm interested in the Mississippi campaign and Army-Navy cooperation -- except on the football field.
