Folio Archives: Brideshead Revisited Limited Edition 1995
Between 1990 and 1995, a series of nine regular titles were published by the Folio Society in quarter Nigerian goatskin leather with Ann Muir marbled paper boards and signed by the artists. They were each limited to 100 numbered copies, and priced between £180 and £200. A few lettered copies (probably around 25) were also issued in this form, for private distribution by the Society.
One of the books to receive this treatment was Brideshead Revisited or The Sacred and Prophane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder by Evelyn Waugh
Mine is an extra rare lettered copy, marked K, one of 25 lettered copies signed by the illustrator Leonard Rosoman on a colophon page added to the back of the book. Rosoman has painted eight delightful watercolours for this (and the standard) edition.
The book is 276 pages long, and is housed in a plain cream slipcase 25x16.6 cm. The contents is the same as the standard edition except for the colophon page.
First published in 1945. Waugh wrote that the novel "deals with what is theologically termed 'the operation of Grace', that is to say, the unmerited and unilateral act of love by which God continually calls souls to Himself". This is achieved by an examination of the Roman Catholic and aristocratic Marchmain family, as seen by the narrator, Charles Ryder. This all sounds very deep and dry, but it is actually a delightfully entertaining book to read.

>1 wcarter: It's nice to see it again, four years and a few thousand miles away! http://www.librarything.com/topic/132649#4057334

Thanks for sharing. A great book, a true classic.

A handsome production, especially the marbled covers, but it's a big design no-no for me to see an author's name omitted from cover and spine.

That's beautiful. I love Brideshead Revisited. (Oddly, it's the only Waugh novel I do love.) Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Fiona, your assistance in obtaining what is now one of my favourite FS books, was greatly appreciated.

>6 wcarter: My pleasure, Warwick! I'm very glad that a member of this group was able to take advantage of what seemed to me to be a good deal, and I was very impressed by your initiative, as the seller was, indeed, very 'old school'.
The Oxford Fair didn't take place this last Easter, but it's in my diary for 2018 (and this time I have wheels....)

Just reread this and has a look at my FS Standard Ed. Great book but it shares the same illustrations as the LE which I don't care for.

>9 LesMiserables: Folio Society issued a new SE in 2018 with illustrations by Harry Brockway which may be more to your taste. A new introduction by A N Wilson was included. I prefer the original 1995 introduction by Frederic Raphael. Raphael clearly didn't like Waugh but it's a well crafted piece
