Italian Cities – Three volumes: Rome, Florence, Venice - by Christopher Hibbert 1997

I love the moire silk bindings that are occasionally done by the Folio Society, and this set has three volumes done in different colours – red, white and green – to match the colours of the Italian flag. The spine is gilt blocked with the title and the symbol of the city is gilt blocked on the lower outer corner of the cover. In many cases the silk colour fades with age, but mine have not over the last 20 years. Moire silk does not photograph well, as it does not show the delightful shimmer as the angle of light shows different patterns in the material.

Each volume describes the history of the city in sufficient detail for all but the dedicated scholar, from its foundation until the 20th. Century.

The books all have a different design for the endpapers, and are lavishly illustrated with black&white and colour photos. They are housed in a slipcase that is printed with a design and gilt blocked with the title, author and publisher.

Venice is 435 pages, Florence 398 pages and Rome 387 pages. The slipcase is 26.5x20.5x10.5cm. The paper is semi-gloss in order to carry the embedded photos.

They are a delight to look at and handle, as well as being easy to read. One of my favourite sets.

This is one of my favorite sets too and it saddens me how cheaply it sells for on eBay given what I paid even many years ago. But I guess it’s good for al the fans of this post who can now run out and get their own copies for less than $40

You may have also mentioned just how heavy this set is given the glossy thick paper used. So buyers shouldn’t be surprised by high shipping costs relative to the purchase price of the set. And they should request sellers pack it extra well to protect from the slipcase getting split in transit.

This is indeed a beautiful set, packed with illustrations on almost every page. Heartily raccomandato for even the most severely afflicted FAD sufferers with no spare shelving or floor space. Looks particularly good at a jaunty Tower of Pisa-ish angle atop any too-tall Folio storage pile.

Oh, a quick question : is there a difference between the 1997 edition and the 2001 reprint ?
