Why do you think the Burmese were going to such lengths to recapture Juan, especially if they were only handing them over to the Chinese?

I believed their story. China wanted to pay Juan back for what he participated in years ago.

I think it was in part because the Burmese military didn't want to be embarrassed in front of China by letting their captives (a one-legged man and a comatose one!) escape.

I thought maybe the Burmese were paid by someone in order to recapture Juan and MacD.

I believe they may be doing a "favor" for China or for Croissard. With his money he could have promised them any type of help that it would buy.

Embarrassment; and they could be in trouble with the Chinese for letting them escape.

They wanted to show off to China and get furure rewards, and as said not be embarrassed.
