Why do you think the computer was telling them how to stop events, at its own cost?

I'm assuming because it already knew that it would never really "die" since it had branched out into so many networks there was always going to be remnants of it.

I found this whole thing quite unbelievable. I agree with >2 bhabeck: that it knew it could never die.

I expected to suddenly hear Star Wars music. A computer with a sense of morality. >2 bhabeck: I agree that it knew it would always retain at least parts of all the information and therefore would always be there.

I think it said in the book that the computer was able to tell who the bad and good guys were and was trying to help the good guys.

Because it had gained sentience (very scary) and knew what Bahar was doing was going to adversely affect a large portion of the human population.
