Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love (1991) and Love in a Cold Climate (1992)

These two delightful books have some of the best covers ever done for a book by the FS. The books are bound in full cloth with printed watercolour illustrations by Roland Pym.

English eccentricity was personified by the actions of the upper class families portrayed in these classic books. The very English humour, fantasies, faux-glamour, peculiar upbringings and family feuds depicted make these a rapid and easy read. The underlying love stories are really a by-product of the stories which were written in the late 1940s.

The Pursuit of Love (which was written first) is 202 pages, and Love in a Cold Climate is 242 pages. Both books are 22.5x14.5cm. in ther plain slipcases. The endpapers are plain pale coloured paper.

The books are illustrated with line drawings by Roland Pym that are full of movement and life. There are 15 in The Pursuit of Love and 17 in Love in a Cold Climate.

The PoL introduction is by Hugo Vickers and that in LiaCC by Pauline Tennant.

I consider the books worth purchasing for the covers and illustrations alone, but the stories are also very entertaining.

Unfortunately I only have the FS leaflet for one of the books.

Wholeheartedly agree, these two books are so well turned out, Pym was a masterful illustrator. Also, think Paul Cox is another great illustrator in a similar way, hope there's more from him in future offerings.

I have these two books. The Pursuit of Love is a far more interesting read perhaps because it’s more autobiographical. I am a bit ruthless with books I don’t love (even if they are beautiful) so was thinking of getting rid of Love in a Cold Climate but they look so good as a pair so it’s staying put.

I get the culling strategy, and I agree with your assessment of the two books. But given how beautiful and unusual these covers are, I agree, it is important to keep both! Luckily neither take up very much room.

I am indebted to you for this - I picked up a copy of Love in a Cold Climate for a steal - and made the final decision after consulting this post! I will almost certainly follow up with The Pursuit of Love as well.
