They retracted the offer, must have not been ready yet. Glad to see more Tolkien coming along though.

I want it a lot and I don't think it would be a great idea to start asking my parents again. I shouldn't be coming to this site or EP site. Just getting frustrated from not being able to get it.

Get it before it becomes impossible to get. I still don't have a copy of Sigurd and Gudrun. The last time I saw the EP version for sale in any manner of marketplace was a ridiculous multi-volume EP/Tolkien set on eBay for something like $10k.

For some reason EP decided to remove this item.

They did it within an hour of you starting this thread. I just happened to have screen captured the page in time. It'll be back eventually.

Omg! The popularity of anything by Tolkien ceases to amaze me! :-O

Ordered Sigurd and Gudrun and received a completely different title. After sending the incorrect order back, it was corrected and Gudrun was received within a short time.

Pretty great deal in conjunction with their free book offer.

This is kind of an odd choice unless they are planning to release the rest of HoME (exluding the 5.5 volumes of the 12 they have already printed). For leatherbound HoME, the 3 volume quarter leather/cloth india paper edition from HarperCollins (1000 copies, printed in 2000) is a better bet, IMHO.

Have no fear, I have full confidence in the EP Marketing Machine. They will keep dripping these titles out and raising the price with each one.

Yes, they seem to have discovered that anything Tolkien will sell quickly. I am actually happy about this and hold out hope that some of the older titles like The Children of Hurin will get a reprint.

I've received/returned several of these because the box they ship them in is too large and the book bounces around inside leading to some nicks/discoloration on the corners of the book.

Has anyone else noticed this?

>17 mortalalliance:, I noticed the box was large, but it was not dinged at all, until I dropped it. Now I have a small ding. dang it!

Mine was also fine, although loose in the carton.

So, have people around here read Tolkien other than The Hobbit and LoTR? If so, what do you think? I'm not a huge fantasy person, although I did read all of the Game of Thrones which I greatly enjoyed. I wonder if EP plans to print GoT? Imagine a signed copy, that would sell like lightening! Although, if you really want a deluxe edition, you'll have to track down the Subterranean Press edition... though I digress.

>20 astropi:

I've read the Silmarillion. Slow start but eventually you get a feel for the flow of the book and what its purpose is. I intend to read some of the others but not all.

GoT seemed to me focused more on character (or families of characters) development and multiple simultaneous event descriptions, whereas the LotR seems focused more on world building and the sheer scale of the adventure. Tolkien was a much better linguist and his attention to detail much finer. Martin is better at dialog and juggling concurrent activity (excepting the split of books 4 and 5). Tolkien is more wholesome a read. Martin spends way too much time and too little imagination on describing colors of banners, armor, and horse tack when different groups meet, at least in the first two books. Both stories are good for what they are.

21: Admittedly I'm not big into fantasy, but I think I enjoyed GoT more than LoTR. Granted LoTR is the grandfather of fantasy, but, I found GoT more..well, sincere. There are definitely things that Martin does that I'm not fond of, but overall it's really great. Then again, I haven't read Tolkien in ages, so maybe if I read it now I'd be totally enamored...
I will say this without second thought, The Hobbit movies were terrible! What a fall after the LoTR movies...

Actually, I get that not everyone is into fantasy. I first read LOTR when I was 12 and liked it soo much that I didn't finish the last book since I didn't want it to end. I only finished it two years later when I read the whole series again.

I like Tolkien, but his poetry can be mind numbingly boring, and the only person who is worse at love stories is George Lucas. :)

>25 hamletscamaro: .....or could it maybe be that we are actually right and millions of people are wrong LOL ;D ...no just kidding.
I actually do watch the movies LOTR and I do enjoy them, beautiful scenery/picture, but when in comes to the books I prefer other literature, but maybe someone can convince me and I'll change my mind someday ;)

Here's the thing about LOTR. If you just want to know if the stories are good, the answer is, Yes, they are really good and will keep you turning the page till the end, although the Silmarillion is a very different kind of read (more like a history book). What really sets Tolkien apart from all the other fantasy books is that he devoted his whole life to building his world...he wrote multiple languages that are not just random sounds, but with specific linguistic rules and formats. He created family trees that tie characters and races together back for thousands of years. He spent painstaking years revising his appendixes, notes, and maps to try to remove any discrepancies. Lastly, Tolkien's own life experiences with being a soldier in World War I as well as seeing the rise of Hitler greatly influence the tone of his stories. You can feel the hopelessness of the cause, yet the characters push on till the end for that faint glimmer of hope that they can still overcome. This is something that I don't think any other fantasy author will ever be able to capture without experiencing similar life-altering events, and most of today's authors have probably not.

By the way, here is a hilarious rap battle between Tolkien and Martin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAAp_luluo0

>28 Wootle: What the...? This only went up three months ago. I purchased this one just a couple of weeks ago and just got it because Histories sold out quickly quickly. I am beginning to panic as soon as a new title comes out that I must get it immediately if I have any small desire that I may want it. Is EP just selling these in very small print runs or are these being sold at amazing rates?

30Wootle

I ordered the newest one the first hour it was announced. Not taking any chances. I would think they have increased the print run seeing how they are selling so fast.

Just curious, did it show up on EPs limited quantities list? I'm interested in a couple of books from EP, now I don't know if I should act fast or will all books eventually end up on the list when there's only a certain number left? I'm keeping an eye on the list but maybe that list isn't always reliable?

32treereader
Edited: Apr 28, 2018, 12:09 pm

The limited quantities list is somewhat reliable for the books it shows - it appears to only get updated correctly for the day's sales at/after midnight. There is still a major problem with books disappearing or being removed without ever making it to the limited quantities page.

So far the ebay sellers haven't realized this being out of stock. So if anyone needs a copy, there is at least one that isn't crazy prized, and several still within reach. Once they figure it out, it will be 300+ right away.

Of course EP may decide to reprint shortly and then there will be plenty. But not likely.
