Do you think we learnt any more about Andy from the school? Any thoughts what might have caused him to lose his confidence?

I think when Andy went off to the university the outside world was a bit of a shock to him and he may have lost his confidence then and decided that he liked the coziness of his small island.

I think we learned that he had a special friendship with Kathryn Rogerson, which was surprising because of the age difference. I'm not sure why he lost confidence but it could be as >2 EadieB: says.

College can be a real awakening for many young people. It may have just been too overwhelming for him.

I really expected that something more significant had happened to him while away, to change his whole personality. What came from the school confirmed that he might fight to defend a woman.

Andy being the oldest may have known about his father and his other women and wanted to protect his mother. That wasn't possible being away at uni. He also could have already been "in love" with Ais and being away from the islands wasn't high on his priorities.

The only thing new that I can think of was his friendship with Kathryn.
