Could they have done anything differently to get to the bones first?

Possibly if they didn't stop for lunch they could have gotten to the bones sooner.

I think the Guild was already ahead of them. They have some sort of source at the Vatican that already knew about the bones in Milan.

I think the Guild was one or two steps ahead of them all the time. That will probably change very shortly.

The Vatican knew about them, so the top guy (Seva?), provided he's not the mole, could have contacted DARPA and they could have sent in another team to extract these bones at the same time Pierce and team were sent to Cologne.

I don't think so. Maybe if they'd had access to the private jet and the holycopter again they could have cut down on their travel time but it seemed like the Dragon Court had been there early in the morning so I doubt they would have made it in time.
