I did think Gray made the correct choice -- at this point, Gray knew there were leaks and he didn't want to lose the one advantage that he currently had. I thought Painter was off doing something to help the team and the only reason Logan thought he was "missing" was because he had been kept out of the loop

Yes as Gray knew there was a leak and had to be careful not to tell the wrong person anything.

I'd guessed that Painter was on his way to Avignon.
