The Immortals : London's Finest Statues by Joe Whitlock Blundell & Roger Hudson 1998

This small book is a Folio Society promotional curiosity.

It was common in the "Membership Years" to have not only a presentation volume (which was often of superb standard), but an extra incentive to subscribe eary. The Immortals is such an incentive, given away to those who subscribed before a specific date.

The book describes 29 of London's best known statues, with a description on the verso page and a black & white photo on the recto. A map of central London on the endpapers locates the statues.

The photography was done by Joe Whitlock Blundell (the now semi-retired director of the FS Limited Editions programme) and is of a reasonable, but not particularly high quality, as many statues are back-lit against the sky and so rather dark. Our esteemed FSD member, Fiona (Huxley the Cat) of Literary Lens fame, may wish to comment on the photo quality.

The descriptions by Roger Hudson are interesting, informative and well written.

The book has no slipcase or dust jacket, and is bound in photo printed paper. There are 64 pages and it is a mere 19x12.5 cm.

There's a more flattering assessment here: http://online.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/doi/abs/10.3828/sj.15.2.6?journalCo...
To me there's a lack of separation between subject and background.
