Tales by Tolstoy 1947

It was inevitable that, in a series such as this, the first book ever published by the Folio Society, Tales by Tolstoy, would eventually be featured. As this is the 50th. in the series, it is probably an appropriate time for such a review.

The book is an unpretentious one, with black quarter cloth binding, and red cloth boards bound by Messers. Brepols. The gilt title and FS logo feature on the spine. It originally had a red dustjacket (mine is missing), is 25.5cm tall, and has 9 engraved illustrations by Elizabeth MacFadyen on tipped in pages. The book has no introduction, 280 pages, and was printed letterpress in Belgium.

The tales are typical Tolstoy, covering various lifestyles in 19th.C Russia, but with an emphasis on military life. They are easy and pleasant reading compared to Tolstoy’s full length novels.

The tales are The Raid, Two Hussars, Three Deaths, Polikushka, Two Old Men and The Death of Ivan Ilyitch.

I wonder how much this would cost if printed today.

I have a copy of this I picked up a few years ago, sadly without it's dust jacket. However the book itself has aged very well.
