Easton Press - THE ADVENTURES OF OLIVER TWIST

So I received my Easton Press The Adventures of Oliver Twist today (with my free THE RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM ... what a nice deal that was).

My question is ... It came with a loose piece of paper that read ...

"This volume indicates that it is in a limited edition of twelve hundred. This is an error. This volume is in a limited edition of six hundred"

Just wondering if this is something anyone has seen before? Wondering if all the Oliver Twists were misprinted or just the first hundred or so (my book is number 116 of 1200 or 600 ... whatever is the real number)

:)

I'm new to the whole easton press thing ... been buying like a drunken sailor for the last month. But I'm still getting familiar with some of the odd things easton press tend to do.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

600 is probably the real limitation. A lot of times they plan on printing more at the beginning, and split the run in half. Once they see that there aren't many pre-orders, they drop the second run and limit it to only half. Has happened several times.

I’d save the letter, as it will be your only proof that the limitation is 600.

But he said it read 1200.

Does anyone have the original leaflet flyer that went out in the mail? I probably do but can't work on digging it up tonight.

Wootle's assessment is correct.

The site is showing 600, so they just decide to axe the second half due to lack of sales.

thanks for all the comments!!!

I'm ok with it ... just thought it was strange. And was wondering if anyone else has a copy and if theirs actually says 1/600 on the inside.

Mine says 116 of 1200 ... but they sent that loose piece of paper to correct it. Found it kind of funny.

I doubt I'll ever sell it ... but if I do ... I suppose it would be good to know what else is out there.

@Wootle ... I can for sure ...

But I'm new to this whole LibraryThing thing ... how do you post pics? And ... how does everyone reply to a specific comment like you did ... >6 thisGuy33: thisGuy33: (did you just type that in)?

I'm old ... lol

>8 thisGuy33: To reply to a specific post, just use the >and then number of the post. The name will be added automatically.

I use imgur.com to post directly into the thread, once you upload there, they will give you a link that you can use to put directly in the post to add the photo. Another way is have a google account and load pictures into it, then link them here. They don't seem to allow hot linking, so it would just be a link to your photos on google. The imgur way is best if you want the photos to show in the post here.

Edit: Another way of course is to email or dropbox them to me and I can do it for anyone that wants to do it that way.

I just received my copy today and have two questions about this title. First, was the issue re the limitation ever resolved? My copy says out of 1200 and online it still says limited to 600 “hand-numbered” copies. Second question, does everyone else’s copy come with solid brown endpages as opposed to the “handsome marbled endpages” ordinarily used in deluxe editions?

>13 judgethatcher: good catch this is some kind of mistake. Oliver is limited to 600. Can you post pictures of your copy? Interesting to see it. It has solid brown end pages, which I like. Something different from other DLEs. Most EP DLEs do not have hand made marble end pages except 80 days around. Just checked mine and I have a low number of Oliver and it also says out of 1200. Nicholas Nickleby is limited to 1200. I wonder if this is mistake and/or Oliver was initially limited to 1200. Maybe Ep printed 600 initially and 600 now. Doesn’t make any sense to me. So, it could be a human error

Email ep customer service and please let us know what they say. I’m really interested to know. It does not bother me a bit. I really like this DLE

>14 fancythings: I can't remember where I saw it, but this has been discussed before, and if I'm not mistaken, there was a statement made by EP at some point.

Basically, they had initially planned to do 1200 (which is why the limitation page states this), but then they subsequently backed off and decided to do only 600, a number which I believe they've confirmed publicly.

Ironically, they must have backed off to 600 at a time when they were feeling less sure about these Dickens facsimiles than they are now. It's the only way to explain why you'd do a limitation of 1200 on Nicholas Nickleby while only doing 600 on Oliver Twist.

>15 whytewolf1: I never heard of it and thanks for sharing and letting us know. Wondering why EP does not include that info on their site under Oliver to avoid calls and frustrations. This issue does not bother me at all. I just want EP to publish all 15 novels by Dickens in DLE format. I’m sure I sound like a broken record by now but I especially want ep to do bleak house and little Dorrit in dle format next

>16 fancythings: I have to tell you, I was hoping the same for a good while, but I'm said to say that I sent my Oliver back. It wasn't due to quality, per se. But being a faithful facsimile, I found the typeface too small and crowded to read comfortably, and I knew it would wear on me and considerably lesson my enjoyment of the books. Fortunately, there's no shortage of nice Dickens editions about (though not many this nice), so I comfort myself with that. :)

>17 whytewolf1: sorry to hear that. I’m still young and has no issues with my eyes even after spending so much time in school. As I get older, I might stop reading DLEs like Oliver but for now I enjoy it with all classical illustrations. Do you have Nicholas DLE? I really like Oliver story and always wanted to have a dle edition of it. Also, if you like watching miniseries, I highly recommend Oliver Twist BBC miniseris from 2007 along with bleak house 2005 and little Dorrit 2008. Excellent production and very well made. Also, highly recommend our mutual friend on Britbox

Oh ok it makes sense now. Thank you for the explanation. I too don’t really care about the number limitation. But it still made me wonder.

@fancythings I’ll get some pics posted

>21 fancythings: facts.

Thank you, DLEs are the best. So the books that I still have wrapped is because back in the day when I bought a book I would keep it wrapped until such time when I was going to read it. But then I started noticing that some books were arriving/had arrived with faults and caused me to start checking each and every book from that point forward.

>18 fancythings: It wasn't so much the inability to read the text, but I do wear glasses, and it would be harder to read for anyone over about 40-45. But I think it actually had more to do with being so spoiled by the beautiful and spacious text layout and the very clear typefaces that I'm used to with the artist edition DLEs. The text in this edition (the Oliver Twist) just looked cramped, unclear, and unpleasant to read in comparison. But that was my personal reaction, and my intention is not to dissuade anyone else from buying these editions. I'm very glad, in fact, that you have enjoyed them so much, fancythings. I just knew if it bugged me early on, it was guaranteed to bug me even more over time.

As for the BBC mini-series, I have seen both Bleak House and Little Dorritt and loved them. And I appreciate the recommendations for the others. It's been a while since I've thought about watching any other BBC Dickens, so now might be a good time to check out one or two I haven't seen. ;)

>23 whytewolf1: I agree that Oliver is harder to read because of how small the font is in this edition. I was also spoiled by EP DLE signed artist editions with clear and large font.
