Welcome to kindle the kindleReaders club

I hope everyone enjoys this group. If you are discussing books please concentrate on books that are available on the Amazon Kindle reader. But don't feel you can't start threads that are about other things but lets try and keep the book threads focused mainly on books. :)

I would also ask that everyone is respectful of others, lively debate is a great thing, name calling and saying things just to be hurtful is something else all together and I hope not to see that here.

Mainly I want everyone to enjoy themselves, life is short have fun!

Should we stick to .azw books that we get from Amazon, or can we talk about Gutenberg.org and other free stuff that the Kindle can read?

I'm guessing that a separate thread for each title would make sense, no?

Is there any particular format we should use? I'm not sure I want to do a full blown junior high school book report. Tired of getting my knuckles rapped.

Sorry for the simplistic questions, I've never been a book group before.

Hey Garry!

I think that any book you can read on the Kindle would be fine, including all the free ones or the ones from baen free library and webscriptions.net.

As far as format I have never done this either and I think it is pretty much whatever you feel is appropriate.

It could be as simple as asking a question about a book and just getting a conversation started or you could post a short review of a book you have read.

Also the book doesn't have to be one you have read on the Kindle it just has to be available on the kindle.

Thanks, Bill! I'm looking forward to it.

I'm currently spending most of my reading time with His Majesty's Dragon, but I've also got Peculiar, MO, Murder on the Leviathan, Slaughterhouse-Five, By Right of Conquest, Undertow, and Living Dead in Dallas in the queue.

Lets see I don't have my kindle yet but the book I am currently reading Bloody Bones is available on the kindle. I have also pre-ordered Undertow as well. I also have ordered Storm Front which is the Dresden files books, weird thing with that one is amazon has book 1 and 5-10 but not book 2 and 3 in the kindle format. :(

His Majesty's Dragon looks good! I think I may get that.

What a great idea. Let's also talk about whatever we can get on our Kindle's. As of now, the most satisfying piece for me has been reading the NY Times each day. I did not make it all the way thru Sunday's but every other day I have been able to skim the article lists and find at least a half a dozen articles I wanted to read. I feel significantly smarter! Wooooowhooo! (-;

Also, as a part of an Early Reviewers discussion on a book about Darfur I was stimulated to buy What is the What. I have been reading The Glass Castle: A Memoir and find it intriguing but have not decided if I would recommend it to others. I have also purchased, but not yet started reading, A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Jungle Book not by Upton Sinclair as the touchstone suggests but the one by Rudyard Kipling (and not Disney). I am sampling Jim Cramer's Stay Mad and Rhett Butler's People and I think I will not buy either of those.

I like the sampling option.

I am excited to read what all you folks are reading and learning about the Kindle.

Hi everyone! It's Amy (Santos)...what a great idea...and a really lovely site! Wow! You're right, there are a lot of groups here. Some I think I may have to check out.

OK...I've read a few so far, am I supposed to list them here? If so, I'll start by listing ONLY my kindle books...right? I just want to make sure that I'm going by the "rules" and doing this right. I've read Book of the Dead by Patricia Cornwell, Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill(that's Stephen King's son), Duma Key:A Novel by Stephen King, Blasphemy, and a few others as well. Plus I'm reading about four at a time...lol and I've sampled a few that I may purchase later and a few that I don't think I will at all. I love looking through what everyone else is reading or has read!

Welcome everyone! This is going to be great!!

XOXO - Amy

Hey...even though I used my brackets correctly, they wouldn't take Blasphemy by Douglas Preston It comes up in red on my list. It did take Douglas Preston's name, but not Stephen King. Did I do something wrong? Curious...

I just reread the entire post and I understand that we didn't have to read it on Kindle, but it has to be available on kindle. What about listing in our personal libraries? Anything.

This is going to be so much fun! Right now I'm reading Water for elephants, which I bought from the kindle store. I am also working my way through a list of the 100 most meaningful books of all time that was put out by a library in New Zealand. I found this list while perusing the LT group centered around the 1001 books you should read before you die. That list was a little daunting, so I stuck with the one thats only 100. That I can handle.

Anyway, obviously most of these are the older classics. So far I have made it through Don Quixote, which I got through manybooks.net, Sons and Lovers, and Wuthering Heights I downloaded from feedbooks.com.

Another that I bought from the kindle store after hearing it mentioned somewhere on LT was Lamb: the gospel according to Biff. I really enjoyed this one, some conservative Christians may not get the humor.

I could go on and on! I love the free samples and have gotten hooked and spent more money because of them (I guess that was the whole idea, eh?).

Oh and I agree with Maggie, the newspapers are great! I'm still working my way through the 2 week free promotions, once I get through all the papers on the Kindle, I'm going to subscribe to the New York Times. So far, it is the best, plus the Sunday book review is all there!

-I edited the name of the LT group, 1001 books you should read before you die.-

#8 - Welcome "A Star Is Born" to both LibraryThing.com and Kindley Book Club. This is a great place, filled with interesting, friendly, and fun people.

Regarding listing your books on your catalog - let the good times roll. There really are very few rules. Most people list books they own, some list books they own + books they have on a WishList. Some add DVDs, CDs, audio books, etc. I list my Kindle books and I tag them as Kindle Books so I know they are different from the hard copy books I own.

The touchstones do not, repeat do not, work reliably. They are helpful so I always try to enclose my book titles with the square brackets but if they don't work, I just move on. No worries.

Feel free to ask other LibraryThing.com questions at the group called Ask LibraryThing or something similar to that. Click on Groups and you can see which groups get the most traffic. Have Fun!

Hi Amy, I'm happy to see you here.

I've started entering books that I've read on my Kindle, or that I've read on paper but are available in Kindle format. (I don't think that's cheating, do you?) I've got about 150 books on my Kindle waiting to be read, and I'll add them as I finish them.

I'm trying to keep my reviews short and to the point. I hope someone finds them useful.

I am going to enter all the books I own in my library whether they are on the kindle or not. But I have been tagging all my kindle books with a kindle tag. Thanks to Maggie for that tip!

First of all, apologies to all who already know the following information: The way Green Dragon goes about discussing a group read is that first they run a thread just asking who will be reading "....."? and let people sort of sign up. Then in a week, or whenever they decide, they run a thread that is a No Spoilers discussion by those who are in process of reading, general comments are made. But important point: all wrecking the book for others by telling too much is avoided. Then after another week or so a thread is started clearly labelled that it includes SPOILERS and is intended only for those who have completed the reading. This system works really nicely.

In reference to Maggie's #10, which references AStarIsBorn #8... (sorta convoluted, sorry)

The group that answers a lot of questions for new LTrs (like me) is titled FAQ. It is very helpful.

Oh, and thanks, Maggie for the perameters on group reads. Sounds like Green Dragon has been successful with this method you mentioned, so if we do a group read I vote we do it the way Green Dragon does (do I get a vote?)

Cheers.

Hi from the old Amazon site. I just finished reading My Lobotomy which is available on Kindle - I don't have one yet. Pretty wrenching. I'm glad they guy was able to sort his life out after what was done to him.

Does everybody like A Thousand Splendid Suns better than The Kite Runner? I thought The Kite Runner was more emotionally complex.

May I humbly offer up my book, War on the Margins, for your perusal?

I saw the book advertised in The New Yorker; I haven't ordered it yet. I have two different books by Anthony Faramus about his Jersey exploits, The Faramus Story and "Journey Into Darkness" (a popular title; about twelve books have it, but none is the one I am referring to). His facts don't check out.

I hope you enjoy my book!

Wow 150 books waiting. It's sounds so great. I need to catch up! What do you think? lol

Oh and post your reviews. I'll definitely find them useful! I love to at least hear an opinion from someone I trust before I read something...if it's available : ) And I always look forward to your opinion!

Thanks a bunch

Feb 3, 2008, 10:44 pm

Hi Richard! Nice to see you here as well! : )

I think I already did this but I'll do it again just incase. My name is Amy and I learned about this great book club over on the Amazon forum. I'm an avid reader, love books and I love to read. Some of my favorite genres are Mystery, Thrillers, Chicklit, anything that's scary and then of course I love my shoe and fashion books. Those are hard to find on kindle I noticed probably because of the gorgeous photos that are usually in them and I'd rather have them on my shelf in hard cover anyway. There were a few however that I'd like to have on Kindle, but they're simply not available yet.

I'm mostly here because I like the people involved and I think the idea is great. I'm always looking for something new to read and I'm always appreciative of someone else's opinion on a novel that I've read.

Hope that helps anyone that doesn't know me or my reasons. Thanks again. I hope see all of you here for a long time to come : )

Blessings!

I believe Faramus was Cary Grant's Personal Assistant for a while.

I just ordered two different books on Chapman, Agent ZigZag and another one listed on Amazon. I'll probably compulsively go through them to check for inconsistencies...

However, in terrible times, sometimes it's a trickster type of person who can slip from one side to another and save lives in the process. Schindler was a good example. Daniel Boyarin, one of my favorite authors, also talks about the "trickster/martyr"dichotomy in his book, Dying for God.

I read The Glass Castle before I got my Kindle. I was in a discussion group about the homeless and someone recommended it. I found it very interesting, but ended up having a lot more questions about the lives of the homeless than I had before starting it.

I have started A Thousand Splendid Suns but am not sure if I like it or not. I have jumped out of it to read other books a couple of times now, but am still pursuing completion of it (i.e., it hasn't completely worn me out yet - I am still waiting for the purpose to show itself) I just finished Peony in Love and, after being really into it in the beginning, it surprised me by doing something I wasn't expecting, so I read the middle part of the book just to see what was going to happen rather than because I was enjoying it. However, by the time I finished the book entirely, I found I had really enjoyed it. Good thing as I like Lisa See's other books.

36lemmon48
Feb 9, 2008, 1:42 pm

By the way, my name is Sally. I also found out about this on the Amazon forum. I read a lot, but am usually a slow reader as I love to feel like I am part of the story and don't want to miss out on anything. I like to read a lot of contemporary fiction, but don't always enjoy all of it. I also like mysteries, suspense, thrillers and some nonfiction/biographies. I joined because these types of groups are usually a great way to find new reads!

Hi,
I'm Mickey (female). I get my Kindle tomorrow and am very excited. I found this site through the blog at Amazon. I've never really been a part of a book club before, but I do love to read. Do lots of it when I'm off during the summer -- I'm an elementary school teacher. Thanks to all of you wonderful people who came up with this idea. I'm very excited.

I'm thinking about ordering Book of the Dead. Would you recommend it? I like mysteries and detective stories.

Message #38

Hi Mickey!

It's Amy (Star) whichever is easier for you... I read Patricia Cornwell's Book of the Dead it was the first book that I read on my Kindle. It's not her best work. I was really let down and I'm a big Kay Scarpetta fan. I love the forensics and mystery that she puts into her writing. In this novel, her characters seemed flat and they got away with much more than the old Kay would have let them get away with. In my opinion it seemed to be written to just turn out the next book. There was a lot of repeating and filler.

There was a time when I actually waited for these books to come out, after this, never again. Also, it's quite strange, I left my review of the book on the Amazon page and noticed that everyone hated me for a review it said 0 of 10 people found it helpful. That's never happened before and then I noticed all of these five star reviews from people that only reviewed that book and all within the same day which happened over a weeks worth of time. It's very odd. It wasn't worth the time...
I used to say that her books were definitely "page turners" but I wanted to close it long before it was over. It pained me to get through it.

In any case, it's up to you. I didn't put what the book is about or what's in it because I didn't want to spoil it for you in case you do decide to read it. Best of luck and thank you again for the well wishes and the prayers. Welcome!

Blessings,
Amy

Hi all, I'm Glenda (from Washington, currently in the Arizona desert). I LOVE my kindle! There is no way I could haul a load of books along with me. In the past I've just listened to audio books but am so enjoying being able to read when we travel. I had an RCA a few years ago, but They no longer support it! Don't even know if there are books available now. The kindle with built in modem is so much better!!!

I'm currently reading Third Degree by Greg Iles it's not as good as True Evil but still worth reading.

I'd like to know which book to start with by J.A. Nance. My husband knows him and I've GOT to read one of his books just so I can say I did! LOL

Al here, screen name amacd. I filled out my profile so won't add anything here. I am not going to enter all the books I have on my "booksread" spreadsheet because I just entered book number 1373 and that is only a partial list. I am up to 21 on the Kindle for 2008. A lot of Edgar Rice Burroughs (I was surprised to discover he wrote SciFi and Westerns as well as Tarzan) and I bought the 12 pack for $10 offered by Steve Jordan. He generally writes SciFi and has no DRM. He has one free book and one followup short story on his site. www.stevejordanbooks.com. For those who have not discovered www.feedbooks.com, they have a list that you can put on your Kindle and order off the list and they show up just like the Amazon books, except they are DRM free and cost free as well.
