The Grand Quarrel 1993
This is a collection of memoirs from the English Civil War, written by six women who observed it, and were involved in the war. The contributors were Mrs. Lucy Hutchison; Mrs. Alice Thornton; Ann, Lady Fanshawe; Margaret, Duchess of Newcastle; Anne, Lady Halkett and Brilliana, Lady Hartley.
These first hand contemporary accounts put a new and feminine slant on the happenings in England during the tumultuous years from 1642 to 1649 when the country was in rebellion, and no-one was sure of anyone else.
Each memoir is different, and gives a varying perspective on the happenings around those involved. Some supported husbands and/or sons on Cromwell’s side, while other self righteously proclaimed the men they supported on the King’s side as heroes.
The background of the war is also covered, with Charles 1 increasing reliance on the royal prerogative and absolute rights, combined with inflation and economic woes, setting the scene for the uprising.
The book contains an informative chronology of the war and its antecedents, ending with the execution of Charles 1. There are also three family trees for the main correspondents, and an informative introduction by Roger Hudson, who also edited the book.
There are 29 pages of black & white illustrations featuring contemporary paintings of those mentioned in the commentaries, as well as maps, diagrams and cartoons. The book is bound in dark blue cloth, gilt blocked with an intricate pattern on both covers. The title and contributor’s names are embossed in gilt on the spine in quite small flowing script. There are 256 pages, and, in the slipcase, it is 24.5x16.5cm. The slipcase is plain dark blue.
Lovers of English history will find this book fascinating for its intimate insights.

Ordered! I saw this book popping up somewhere before, but didn't get past its busy spine. Turns out the boards are beautiful, and that paper! I love laid paper. The subject is fascinating, can't wait for my copy to arrive. Thank you, Dr. Carter!

>1 wcarter: Thanks.
I saw three copies of this in Kellows in Chipping Norton on Saturday, who have a bookcase of older FS.
I also did not get past the cluttered spine and thought that it was a FS compilation. I will have to look at it properly!
