Dicken’s London 1966 and Dickens in Europe 1975

Although they were published nine years apart by the FS, these two books are in series with identical bindings and formats.

Dickens is at his descriptive best as he gives a detailed insight into his home city and how it compares to the foreign cities on the Continent. Dickens was extremely well travelled for his era, and also visited the USA and Canada.

Both books are collections of essays by Charles Dickens about the life of the places around him, initially in London, and later on his wanderings through Europe.

Dickens’ London
In London his perspicacious insights into city life are fascinating. There are 26 essays covering the aristocracy and the paupers of the city, as well as many of the tradesmen in between, describing their daily lives, entertainments, transport and social interactions.

The book has 15 sketches of London characters by George Cruikshank, an introduction by Rosalind Vallance and is 239 pages long. Some of these sketches feature on the front and back covers. It is still in print in the original format after 52 years, and available from the FS at a very reasonable price here. – possibly the longest unchanged print run in FS history.

Dickens in Europe
The European book is primarily about Italy, but also has chapters on Paris and Switzerland as they were between 1837 and 1865, written at different times during Dickens’ several European journeys. I found the first chapter, on his experiences crossing the Channel for the first time on the Calais Night Mail in 1837 particularly interesting, as is his description of crossing the St.Gothard pass from Italy to Switzerland. The mode of travel has certainly changed in the last 180 years.

This book has map endpapers, 14 contemporary black & white illustrations, is again introduced by Rosalind Vallance and is 212 pages long. Two of the internal illustrations are printed on the covers.

Both books are quarter bound in dark brown cloth with image printed light brown paper sides. The slipcases are plain dark brown and23.5x15.5 cm.

Warwick,

I just wanted to point out that the printing number of both books was the first with these bindings. All of the previous printings came in full yellow cloth with one of the illustrations from the book on the front. That of Dickens in Europe has the same picture. Dickens' London's picture is a single character, Parise Beadle (fp 208). Both of my books have the title oriented from bottom to top. I can send you a jpg if you think it worthwhile to incorporate them.

Also, I just discovered that Dicken's London is available in the summer sale.

edited to add picture of previous bindings.

If you could add pictures of the variations of this edition to this post, that would be great.

Hmmm, I have and enjoyed the Dickens in London but lacking a Folio 60 I was unaware of the Dickens in Europe. Oh, now a seeker am I.

We do though have the invaluable archive of FS books on this site thanks to your efforts and Folio Books.

I have read various accounts of his popular US lecture tour but don't recall seeing any of his own accounts.
