The Witches of Salem, A Documentary Narrative 1982

I could find no more suitable book for review number 66 in this series than this one.

Edited by Roger Thompson, and with numerous integrated linocuts by Clare Melinsky, this slim volume gives a succinct outline of the infamous events in Salem, Massachusetts in the brief period between January 1692 and September 1693. Many innocent people, usually elderly and probably demented women, were consider to be afflicted by the devil, and 17 of the more than 50 accused were subsequently executed. So many were afflicted by the devil in Salem, that there was likely to have been an element of mass hysteria involved.

There was a long history of executing purported witches in both Old and New England, and belief in witchcraft was almost universal, but the persecutions reached a peak in the small village of Salem. A list of 17 characteristics of witches are listed in the Introduction, and these were used during the trials to indict the accused.

It was believed that witches could cause sickness and death, modify the weather, create strange apparitions and cause crop losses. Natural phenomena were not accepted as such, but were all blamed on super-natural forces, and those “responsible” had to be punished and eliminated from society.

This Folio Society edition is quarter-bound in black cloth with white cloth covers with a black image on the front. The spine title is very small, and gilt printed. There are 194 pages with an explanatory introduction at the front and a chronology at the back of the book. The slipcase is plain dark red and 23x15cm. The text follows the development of the witch hysteria in Salem, and its gradual decline under the guidance of higher courts.

Perhaps when you reach 666 you might consider Malleus Maleficarum from 1968?

Welcome back!

At the rate of one review a week, it will take me more than another decade to get to 666!
There are plenty of books left to review, but I doubt I have the stamina to continue reviewing for that long - but you just never know........
I’ll keep your suggestion in mind ;-)
