The Droste effect, known in art as mise en abyme, is the effect of a picture recursively appearing within itself, in a place where a similar picture would realistically be expected to appear.
I remember this type of gag was used on the cover of a Mad magazine, where Alfred E. Neuman (Mad's cover boy) was illustrated reading the very issue that he was on the cover of.

These are a couple of covers that I own; the Pierre Perret book 'Illustré Par L'exemple'

...and the Guy Pearce film 'Momento';

but I am sure there must be many others, so please feel free to post them here. It would be fun to see what you find.
