This title is representative of the entire set.

An Eye for an Eye was initially published in serial form in 1870, and later as a book in 1879. Like many other novels of the era, it is a love and adventure story. Set in Ireland, in which a cavalry officer (Justin Groch) who inherits an earldom, seduces an impoverished but beautiful young woman (Kate O’Hara). There are naturally, complications that end in tragedy.

I found the depiction of life in the different classes in Ireland, and the interactions between them, as depicted in the novel, quite fascinating, and it made for an entertaining read.

All the books in the series are quarter-bound in cloth with pattern printed boards. The plain brown slipcase is 23.5x15.5cm. An Eye for an Eye has 169 pages, is introduced by Maeve Binchy, and has 16 delightful and very detailed black & white illustrations by Elisa Trimby (a significant number for a relatively short book). Interestingly, the drawing that is shown in the prospectus, does not appear in the book, although there is a near mirror image version that does (seeArdkill Cottage drawing below and prospctus at foot of post).

Thanks for this, always enjoy reading these posts! I love the FS Trollope set. Some are better than other content-wise but I think the binding and illustrations are beautiful and really suit his works.

>1 wcarter: When you dated the series as 1981-1999, did you intend to write 1989-1999? I was wondering whether you were deliberately including the earlier version of the Barsetshire novels (which to my mind are a rather different format), but even if you did, the first of these was published in 1976.
