By first real excursion into the world outside our own has been through the Faeries Oracle by Brian Froud.
I find this deck truly marvelous. It isn't based on the major arcana of the traditional tarot, but rather on those little people that Froud has masterfully brought to life in such exquisite illustrations. Indeed, I find this deck a lot more intuitive than the tarot and a lot more insightful. But I accept that that is me and the tarot works much better for others!
The faeries tend to give an amazingly accurate glimpse into the emotional wellbeing of the recipient. I find the faeries talk much more about the invisible than the visible. In prediction, they are dealing with projections based upon emotion not physical fact. I know this is very frustrating for some people who prefer the much more established hard and fast rules of the tarot.
The faeries also demand that you have fun with their deck - that you play with them. I never do a reading that involves established spreads - another frustration for people who like their rituals and acepted practices. But I find that the fluidity of the faeries is liberating. Sometimes I'm tempted to just throw the cards down and see what way they fall for a reading. Indeed, sometimes to draw the cards I swirl them over the floor and have the recipient just pcik out what they want. I read them based upon the hap-hazard way they are laid out.
My own frustration with the faeries is very much that I often have to walk away before the reading sinks in. Sometimes I sleep, when I awake, the reading makes much more sense. But that is lack of practice, I imagine....
Are there any other users of the Faeries Oracle out there? perhaps you have a markedly different experience with them to me....?
