Happy New Year!

Happy reading in 2019, Helen!

First book for the year, the Long Utopia by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter. 4th in the Long Earth series, I agree with some reviewers that this is more like old style ‘sciency’ Science Fiction. Good read.

Happy 2019
A year full of books
A year full of friends
A year full of all your wishes realised
I look forward to keeping up with you, Helen, this year.

>8 PaulCranswick: thanks Paul, I hope to keep up with you and others as well. Best reading for 2019.

I enjoyed the Ice Princess which is the January book for the Lackberg and Leon mystery read. Less grim than some scandicrime, characters and plot improved in the second half.

the Secret Hunters , which I listened to on a library audiobook, is billed as an Antarctic adventure, but is much more a personal (fictionalized?) account of Nazi atrocities around one family and the survivor’s engagement in searching out the villains. Well written, but gloomy. Perhaps we need to hear this message more, especially recently.

Boundary Waters by William Kent Krueger. I read his Iron Lake last year and decided to continue the series. One of my libraries has a pretty complete collection, and I believe has had the author at their speaker series. I’ll be back for more. Well crafted mystery, lots of death, but not excessive dwelling on gore, and in this book, camping and traveling around the Boundary Waters of Minnesota. Significant Native American stories and legends.

Just reread In the Bleak Midwinter. The book surfaced recently from a box being sorted for donation. It is still good.

And #6 for 2019, Donna Leon’s Fatal Remedies. I thought this one of the better books in the Guido Brunetti series, but won’t spoil it for others reading the Lackberg-Leon group read.

Just stopping by to drop a star. I noticed that you and I seem to have fairly similar taste in books. I, too, enjoyed Julia Spencer-Fleming's Clare Fergusson series, and am eagerly awaiting the next in the series. I did see that she lost her husband a year or so ago, after an illness, so I can certainly understand that writing is not tops on her list at the moment.
I'm doing the Lackberg-Leon read as well, but I think I'm only going to do the Leon side. I've got a huge backlist of reading planned, and didn't save room for the Lackberg, unfortunately.

I picked up My Name is Asher Lev from the Chaim Potok month of the American Authors challenge. Very good book- much thought inspiring. This is one of the best things about LibraryThing- encouragement and information to try new books!.

Two more: Death in Salem by Eleanor Kuhns. 02-02-2019
Fourth in a mystery series set in eighteenth century New England. Ok mysteries, but pretty good depictions of the times and people.
Death of a Macho Man by M.C. Beaton 02-03-2019 audiobook
Hamish McBeth, Highland Scotland’s least ambitious policeman fumbles his way through another set of murders. A bit formulaic, but good audiobook for commuting.

I edited Post #2 to catch up my reading for this year=- so far at 30 books (and audiobooks)
I have not been commenting, but at least I'm reading and keeping track.

I've made no improvement on commenting about my reading, but just finished the 75th book for the year. I've been pulled in other directions- so the record is the dates of Finishing each book in my library listing. A fair number of this year's books are audiobooks - mostly from the library - listened to during commuting. I do enjoy the limited discipline of keeping track- which also helps managing the huge TBR piles in our house.
