Group Reads 2019

1Andrew-theQM
Edited: Dec 26, 2018, 6:38 am

This is a provisional list of Group Reads for 2019 (the whole year!). We seem to have or planned to have a number of series on the go, as well as some approaching the end of the series. I’ve only put two for each month leaving space for the monthly vote. I haven’t put any standalones in, e.g. Robert Goddard, but can do this through the monthly votes.

2. Where Serpents Sleep by C S Harris

>1 Andrew-theQM: Looks great. I checked the library and there are only 4 that they don't have and I'm fairly sure they will have no problem getting them. I'm fine until February and the only James Oswald they have now they have because I requested them...so I'm sure they won't mind getting another one.

>2 Carol420: I still need to check availability at the library. Your library does well.

4Carol420
Dec 27, 2018, 5:58 am

>3 Andrew-theQM: I was amazed...and pleased I might add...that they had the Chris Carter book. It has always been so hard to get his books which didn't make any sense since he is an American writer. Maybe they've found another source. Whatever. There was I Am Death in all it's glory just waiting to come home with me.:)

Dec 27, 2018, 6:00 am

>4 Carol420: Strangely some American authors are easier to pick up in the U.K. than many British authors.

>6 Carol420: Some American authors seem more popular in the UK, e.g. Chris Kuzneski.

This is the schedule for the Group Read of The Black Echo by Michael Connelly, Book 1 in the Harry Bosch Universe Series. Unfortunately very uneven due to the structure of the book, and the lack of chapters in the book and some long parts.

Saturday 24th August : Part 2 and 3
Sunday 25th August : Part 4 and 5
Monday 26th August : Part 6 and 7
Tuesday 28th August : Part 8, 9 and Epilogue

This makes a shorter first section, and then four longer sessions.

Believe it or not we are in the middle of reading 13 series! Although 7 of these series we are 1 or 2 books from being up to date with - all but two of these series are still being written.

This is the current situation.

Robert Hunter Series by Chris Carter: Currently 2 books to go.
Dr David Hunter Series by Simon Beckett : Currently 1 Book to go
Wesley Peterson Series by Kate Ellis : Currently 18 books to go.
Tony McLean Series by James Oswald : Currently 2 books to go.
Sigma Force Series by James Rollins : Currently 8 books to go.
Sebastian St. Cyr Series by C S Harris : Currently 9 books to go.
Cotton Malone Series by Steve Berry : 2 books to go after the December read.
Lacey Flint Series by Sharon Bolton : 1 Book to go.
Ruth Galloway Series by Elly Griffiths : Currently 1 Book to go.
DI Kim Stone Series by Angela Marsons : Currently 11 books to go.
Harry Bosch Universe by Michael Connelly : A lot of books to go!
Camel Club Series by David Baldacci : 4 Books to go.
Oregon Files Series by Clive Cussler and Boyd Morrison : Currently 1 Book to go.

2 questions before I pull up the schedule for 2020.

1. Are you happy to continue reading all these series?

2. We are currently just reading these series. Are you happy to just plough on reading these series with 2 books a month, or are you wanting to resurrect an occasional book we vote to read which is not part of these series?

If I have missed out a series, please let me know.

70Sergeirocks
Dec 15, 2019, 7:21 am

>69 Andrew-theQM: 18 Wesley Peterson's, lol!

Some of these are close to being up-to-date, and I think it safe to say we mostly enjoy them all, so seems silly not to continue with them as they stand.
I've personally not nominated many books for the group reads, so this is not an issue for me. It just depends on how quickly we want to get through what we already have waiting, new nominations would obviously delay things; plus, I think one-offs can sometimes be hit-and-miss - but that's just my opinion.

71Andrew-theQM
Dec 15, 2019, 7:28 am

>70 Sergeirocks: We are currently reading 24 books a year as Group Reads so with this many series only reading about 2 - 3 in a series a year. I have read the Wesley Peterson series at a faster rate than others this year (we’ve read 5 of them) as quick reads and so many in the series.

Thanks for your feedback. 😊

72Carol420
Edited: Dec 15, 2019, 7:34 am

Since there is only 1 more Lacey Flint book I say we finish the series. The rest of these are all good to continue as far as I'm concerned. There are several like the Oregon Files and Cotton Malone that we may have just caught up with the writing...but there will more than likely be more.

If you are going to add series...David Baldacci's Amos Decker series and his John Puller series are good. There are 4 Amos Decker and 5 John Puller. I'm game for anything along these lines as long as I don't have to read Stuart Woods (I dropped his Stone Barrington series this year) or James Patterson.

73EadieB
Dec 15, 2019, 8:09 am

I'm happy to continue reading these series. I think we have enough left to read to complete 2020. We can look at the end of 2020 and see if we need to add more then.

74bhabeck
Dec 15, 2019, 10:26 am

I'm good with continuing the series currently in the pipeline. If we want to finish a couple of the series with a push (ie beckett, flint, etc) - assuming that they are finishing, not just that we've caught up - I'm game for that too.

My personal favorites are Tony McLean, Sebastian St Cyr, Kim Stone, The Oregon Files and Robert Hunter.

75bluebird_
Dec 15, 2019, 12:29 pm

>69 Andrew-theQM:. I hadn’t seen a nomination thread. With all these series, will there be any stand alones? I’d like to join some GR’s but am far behind in some series, and haven’t started others.

76Olivermagnus
Dec 15, 2019, 9:24 pm

I'm fine to continue the series we have but I think we should hold off on incorporating any new series in 2020. I think we should consider a standalone a couple of times in 2020 for readers who don't want to join us in mid series. However, whatever makes it easiest for Andrew and his workload. I think the group would fall apart with his leadership.

77gaylebutz
Dec 15, 2019, 9:51 pm

I am just an occasional participant so I’ll leave it to the regulars to decide. My personal favorites are Harris, Bolton, Griffiths and Connelly.

78Carol420
Edited: Dec 16, 2019, 2:09 pm

>76 Olivermagnus: I like the idea for an occasional standalone also. I know we would fall apart with Andrew unless someone wants to try their hand at creating these interesting, well thought out, questions. Is that the sound of everyone rolling on the floor in boisterous fits of laughter that I hear??? We could cut down to only one at the times that Andrew is up to his neck in reports and small children if he wants.

79Andrew-theQM
Dec 16, 2019, 2:27 pm

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

My suggestion is to carry on with all these series and looking quickly to get the ones which are nearly up to date, up to date! I then suggest once a quarter we use the spaces for a standalone, some will be Robert Goddard as we were reading those and some we’ll ask for nominations. Hopefully this will get the best of both worlds.

I should be okay doing two reads a month, even at peak times, as can change when in the month we do those two.

I was planning to do another David Baldacci Series when we finish the Camel Club Series, was most probably looking at the John Puller Series. None of the David Baldacci Series are too long, but still likely to be 2021 before we get to those.

I will post the 2020 books next week when I’ve finished school and have collapsed in the corner somewhere. 🤯😳😂 But to give you the heads up and so you can get hold of books, in January we will be reading:

1. Evil Games by Angela Marsons, #2 in the Kim Stone Series

2. A Painted Doom by Kate Ellis, #6 in the Wesley Peterson Series.
