I didn't even know about those until I read your message. I have got to watch the news more carefully!

They had one in Sweden, near Malmö last week (16 Dec). Force 4.9, and was felt in northern Germany (Rostock area) as well. I am actually closer to Malmö than Rostock is, but there was nothing here.

I guess it depends on which way the fault line runs or something as to whether you feel it or not. I've only experienced one tiny earthquake in my life, which is not unusual since I live in West Virginia. It was so small that I thought our washing machine had an unbalanced load of clothes and was shaking. Other people asked me later if I had felt the quake. Oh, well.

I've just ordered a book on earthquakes: Earthshaking Science: What We Know (and Don't Know) about Earthquakes. I'm looking forward to learning more as I read that.

Do you know how serious the quake near you was? 4.9 doesn't sound bad, but I know it depends a lot on other circumstances how much actual damage and injury it can cause.

I'm much more impressed with my tiny earthquake now that I visited the USGS page. It has an entry here.

They mention broken windows in Lerona, Oakvale and Elgood. My home was centered pretty much between those three towns.

Magnitude 4.5. Hmmm. Still not much, but it's always interesting to read about something you experienced first hand.

And it is listed as the largest earthquake in West Virginia. Obviously we are not very seismically active.
