Hi - still wavering on Faulkner:
One source ("Faulkner and the Southern White Moderate")
notes that while he may not precisely be a racist (using the n-word when you are young doesn't count),
that -
"If, however, by 'racism' one means a belief in the inferiority of negroes,
one could probably answer that question with a Yes..."
We had to read The Sound and The Fury in college and I remember not being impressed;
again, As I Lay Dying is memorable.
For Charles Dickens, even readers who dislike/hate his style/characters/plot, or his personality/behavior, etc.,
will welcome his role as an effective Social Reformer.

Hi, Marianne. I've confused you - my apologies. The link to the new cafe is in >2 jnwelch:.
I actually dislike reading Faulkner. Can't help meself, and I know he's highly respected, with scads of fans. Dickens had a controversial personal life, but I'm glad you view him as an effective Social Reformer. He felt it deeply, as far as I can tell.

Checked through Howard Zinn's lengthy bibliography, but no Rising Sun.
It would have been good to see a dialogue with John Toland.

I know you read Confederates in the Attic recently, Joe. You'll be sorry to hear that Tony Horwitz died unexpectedly yesterday, while on tour for his new book. Not much info out there yet, but Jon Clinch posted a link on Facebook a brief notice from the Martha's Vineyard newspaper.

Ron - thank you for The Burning Mountain recommendation on Joe # 9.
Based on the single great review, I'll plan for very slow reading when it arrives from abe.

You're welcome Marianne. The novel was recommended to me some years back (along with another one called Death is Lighter Than a Feather that I have not yet read or tracked down. It remains one of the very best books I have read this past decade.

Since mine was the first entry, it somehow got directed here instead of to the new one and have no idea how to transfer my first long message...
so I'm still here enjoying the quiet ambience.

>10 m.belljackson: The quiet ambiance should be conducive to peaceful reading, Marianne.
If you'd like me to copy and paste your original post into the new cafe, just let me know. :-)

Joe - Everyone's predicting a Federer win for tomorrow - how about a RAFA Cheering Corner here?!?

I'm with you, Marianne. Go Rafa! Even before the wonderfully named grandson of ours, I was a Rafa fan. I love his style of play. This is his best surface, but neither of them is a youngster, so we'll see.

>15 m.belljackson: Ha! RAFA!!!!!! We did it, Marianne. Well, Rafa had something to do with it, I guess. :-)
We were out, but I got to watch highlights. My goodness, those two are great players. Rafa is just so tough on a clay court. I noticed that they had nothing but good things to say about each other afterwards.

Young Rafa can stand even taller today!
