Two Tales by Mrs. Aphra Behn : The Royal Slave and The Fair Jilt 1953

Mrs. Aphra Behn (1640-1689) was a Englishwoman who found herself, via Surinam, destitute in London. She supported herself by writing popular plays and novels, probably the first woman in England to ever do so. These are two of her most well-known novellas.

The Royal Slave (86 pages) is the story of a West African prince who is tricked into slavery, and the trials and tribulations he suffered in transportation to Surinam.

The Fair Jilt (60 pages) is a complex love story set in Antwerp that features a manipulative vixen in a story that has lots of unexpected twists and turns.

Both stories are very readable despite the 350 year old English style.

The 22.2x14.5cm. book is covered in a brown printed dust-jacket, but this hides beautifully marbled paper boards. The book is quarter bound in black cloth with gilt spine title and decoration. There was no slipcase. There are three illustrations in each story, as well as a decorated title page and two story headers, by Iris Francis. It originally retailed for 15 shillings.

Found this about a month ago while browsing in Chapters in Dublin. As you say it reads well for it's age. And the marbled boards are indeed lovely.

This is a lovely book! Aphra Behn was English, though.

Thanks for this, brings me back to my undergrad days, where I discovered so many wonderful works of literature. I wish FS would publish more works like these (ie Gissing, Burney, Braddon).
