Sappho – A Picture of Life in Paris by Alphonse Daudet 1954

Written in 1883, this is a dramatic and tangled love story centered in and about Paris. Sappho is the nickname of Fanny Legrand, given because she was as promiscuous as her namesake, the ancient Greek poetess from Lesbos.

Jean Gausin is a 21 year old man from rural southern France who becomes enchanted with the ageing Sappho, and the book follows their spirited romance for more than five years, while showing off the gay life in Paris and the more gentle lifestyle of those in the nearby countryside.

The 183 page book describes Parisian characters and lifestyles, and is illustrated by eight pen and ink drawings by Susan Einzig. The translator from the French is Ethne Wilkins. There is an unattributed forward, but no introduction. The small book is bound in unillustrated dark green silk with gilt spine title and FS logo. The top page edges are stained red. This was only the second book issued by the FS in a slipcase, which is light grey, and has a paper pasted front label that shows the title and one of Einzig’s drawings. The slipcase dimensions are 23.5x14.8cm.
