Any thoughts on why the containers were empty?

No. No idea.

Maybe someone switched them.

I believe that they were for show in case the ship was boarded. I don't think that the ship stopping to "help" was ever intended to happen. Rasul was surprised and not very happy about the ship going to the "rescue".

I thought there was a false wall or that the containers/contents had been switched.

I didn't have any idea.

I hadn’t worked out any theory for this.
