Why do you think Diego Garcia was targeted by the missile?

I think Diego Garcia was targeted by the missile in order to take control of the island. It is a joint US/UK military base. The land is owned by UK and between 1966 and 1973 the farm workers were removed from the island by the UK, following which the United States built a large naval and military base. The population now is composed of military personnel and supporting contractors. It is one of two critical US bomber bases in the Asia Pacific region, along with Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, Pacific Ocean.

I think because it was US-controlled and had a low population. Killing the 3,000 people on the island would have gotten the US's attention and would have had them hunting down whoever was behind the attack. (just as Mallik had wanted)

I can't add anything to what >2 EadieB: and >3 bhabeck: have already said. It's scary how little regard some have for human life no matter how many or how few there are to kill.

Can't say why they chose this particular target.

Not really sure at this stage why they were targeting that island.

I thought it might be strategically important, so destroying it might be a way to keep other countries from quickly responding to other military threats.
