Because he wanted to get back to the transmitter than he'd ditched under the truck so that they could let the Oregon know that they were ok and to try to let them know where they were headed.

As Brenda said, plus he wouldn't want to risk the safety of the plane the cars would be loaded onto if he was going to be a forced passenger (ie. prisoner) on it.

He needed to send a message to Juan through the transmitter but it was also a good way to prove he wasn't working for Mallick.
