Did Murph do the right thing by getting the satellites to re-enter the atmosphere?

Burn them up since he wasn't able to really control them. Lucky they weren't in a populated area. A rocket falling into your backyard to put a real damper on your cookout.

yes - if not someone or some nation would have salvaged them and activated them. Then we'd be right back in the same position

Yes. At some point in the future someone might have been able to turn them to face Earth again. (Though they might have come in handy if Earth was ever invaded by computer-driven alien spaceships...😉)

I think they had to be totally destroyed.
