Medieval People & Medieval Women by Eileen Power 1999 & 2001
Life in a Medieval Village, Life in a Medieval City & Life in a Medieval Castle by Joseph & Frances Gies 2002
This series of five books are written to give insight into the everyday lives of people who lived between 1500 and 800 years ago (although the dates for the actual medieval period are controversial). They detail how the average person worked, relaxed, married, died and worshipped in a variety of situations. The people of the era are given a voice in the modern world.
Eileen Power’s two volumes were released individually in 1999 and 2001, while the three written by Joseph & Frances Gies were released as a three volume set in a single cover titled slipcase in 2002. All are bound in the same style using cover image blocked printed cream parchment paper. Medieval People has a slightly different style cover with images blocked on both covers.
All the books are 23.5x16.4cm. in their red slipcases, with again Medieval People being different in having a mid-blue slipcase. All books also have bound-in pages of colour and B&W illustrations, and an index.
The book details are:-
Medieval People by Eileen Power. Introduced by Emmanueal le Roy Ladurie. 1999. 253 pages
Medieval Women by Eileen Power. Edited by M.M.Postan. Foreward by Emmanuel le Roy Ladurie. Introduced by Maxine Berg. 12001. 30 pages. This was first published after Eileen’s death (1889-1940) and compiled from her notes.
Life in a Medieval City by Joseph & Frances Gies. Preface by Judith Herrin. Map endpapers. 2002. 244 pages.
Life in a Medieval Village by Joseph & Frances Gies. Preface by Judith Herrin. Plain endpapers. 2002. 252 pages.
Life in a Medieval Castle by Joseph & Frances Gies. Preface by Judith Herrin. Map endpapers. 2002. 232 pages.
Overall, a beautiful and desirable set.
There are 67 images in this longest ever illustrated review, so I apologise if it takes a while for some of you to open the post.

This is actually one of my favorite Folio Society history sets. Very beautifully presented and (to me) very interesting to read. But medieval European history is a bit of a hobby horse of mine so may not be for everyone. I agree, though, Warwick, your pictures and review do it justice.
