I'm interested in allowing all who may want to use our local church physical library to view the library's collection on "Library Thing" on line, but I want to prevent any casual user from modifying the data. Is there away to set up "read only" access?

Anyone can view your LibraryThing account online, but only people who are signed into your account can change data, so you already have this. See the URLs on your profile.
With TinyCat (https://www.librarycat.org/) your users would have a simpler view of things, but it has costs involved.
And no, I'm not going to email you. Putting your email address in a public forum is asking for spam and phishing attacks. Sending email to such accounts is not as risky, but I don't care to give my email address out to strangers.
