When we were at the art store yesterday I saw a book I wanted, but I checked and saw that I had owned it and decided to give it to a local school. But I haven't been there in over a year. The bag for them is quite full. Guess what! Now it's a little less full. I may not keep it long, but it is good for a current project.

StoffDruck Hmmm. They work differently from the other sources I've looked at. What I did today was not totally satisfactory. I have a few ideas of how to improve. May try this way of getting the ink on the stamp, too.

Anyway, this is an undiscard.

Yes, and didn't even ask Jerry if he agreed. It was falling apart. These were actually our youngest son's, who had picked them up used. The ones that are holding together can have shelf space, even though nobody ever opens them. But that one was a mess.

There is even a note inside On Being the Church in the World from 2003 that it was still worth reading. I checked one chapter - one on racism - You know the most painful thing about some of the writings from back then is that the authors really expected that writing about these issues was going to change things. At the same time with a big plank in his own eye. How can you write about changing racism as another privileged white male bishop? The Church of England now has a black archbishop and a few female bishops, but back then the clergy was very white male. And that was not one of Robinson's issues. His chapter did not end with a call to start training and ordaining other sorts of people. He had written that racism was unChristian. That was enough.

I've been thinking again about a case I read about - probably from that era. A parish was changing from white, middle class to more diverse. Problem, that even the parish church has become aware of, was that the new diverse neighbours weren't coming into the church. So they hired a consultant to help them attract new members. He immediately asked them about their parish logo. They explained proudly that it expressed the way they all supported each other, and should also be a sign that they would give new members the same support. The consultant had to explain to them that four clasped hands, all white, all wearing cuffed sleeves, expressed that white middle class males support each other and don't let anyone else in. My dear Scottish housemother used to quote Robert Burns a lot.

They are good, but I'd rather read something new than reread them.

1) Gran cocina latina went with us to our favourite Latin American restaurant tonight. Our hosts were delighted to get it, and I am relieved to have found a good home for it. Much too specialized for me.

I divided the stack of discarded books into two bags that are each heavy enough, but still movable. But then realized that they are stuck in the hall for who knows how long. Jerry can't take them to the UNWG as long as corona restrictions exist.

They have just upped the restrictions again. No restaurants at all, no playgrounds, even smaller libraries closed. Not much I can do to help parents who don't know what to do with the kids. Children and seniors are not supposed to mix. But, for whatever it's worth, I have just put a big box of children's books in German and English out at the street.

I guess that takes care of March.

I was just outside, and it looks like about half of the books are gone.

Sadly, that wouldn't happen in my neighborhood.

Brought the box in at 6. Getting cold, dark and windy. I think about 2/3 went. I'll put them out again any day it's sunny.

No idea how well this would work normally, but parents are now faced with kids at home for weeks with nowhere to go with them. Not even playdates if you want to go to a friend's house, if you each have 2 kids and obey the 'no more than 5 people together' rule.

Our chancellor is a young man with no children. I don't think he has any idea how unrealistic his rules are for families. Getting the kids out of the house for a few hours at least twice a week is essential for Mom's mental health. And that's if you have a house and garden. If you live in a small city apartment even more so.

1) Don't know much about the Civil War

I also threw a handful of song booklets from my childhood into the paper recycling.

I hadn't put the box out for a while, but I put it out yesterday, and early evening my husband asked, "What are people doing out under our postbox?" Sure enough, a family was looking through it. The son chose a few Asterix books and two books on paper airplanes. The parents wanted something for their daughter to practice her English on, and decided that the whole family might enjoy reading The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins together. We had a nice chat -at distance, of course. I suspect they may come back for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I've just gone though various shelves and added 8 more books to the box. Rather a lot of craft books I'll never use again.

My husband has given me permission to discard Silicon Snake Oil. I'd rather spend the space on new nature books. Apparently I never entered it. Fine. Not doing it now, either.

I needed to shelve a new biography.

What discipline!

I'm trying to clear a few areas of floor. To do that I need space in the bookcases for books. I will not read either of those again.

Just had a thought. Bleh! I had marked Sonderlinge, Außenseiter, Femmes Fatales for discarding. It did not need shelf space. Better go get it.

1) Iberia It's been sitting on my shelf for at least 10 years, and I really have no desire to read it.

I still have no way of getting rid of books right now.

However, I have found three t-shirts to discard to make way for three I have bought.

2) State of the Union, Kennedy is going in the paper recycling rather than inflict it on anybody else.

I did take three books in German to the recycling centre yesterday, exchanging them for the best things I could find. I think I raised the average quality of the selection. Considering that these were all 'read once' that is rather sad.

At least someone had gone through since I last checked things out and removed the 20 year old guide books and computer handbooks.

A few years ago I bought a beer advent calendar. Today we emptied the rest of the bottles and added them to our recycling collection.

What kinds of beers? We like to taste all kinds; but I’ve never been good at keeping a record and our impressions.

This was a wild collection. Should have been fun, but I can't drink a bottle of beer a night. Right now I have almost finished a 6 pack of Ottokringer Mango Radler. Ie a half-half mixture of beer and soda. I mix it half-half with water, and might get through most of a can in an evening. But not every evening. I probably bought this early July.

Emptying the bottles was fun, because the beer was all sorts of shades.

I wouldn't know where to go if I had really liked one of these and had wanted to buy more.

The pumpkinseed beer might have been bought separately, but was from the same general time frame. I've had similar things at times and quite enjoyed it.

Anyway, these and a few other old bottles are no longer using up refrigerator space.

Oh dear, I saw an eight-pack of craft beers today. This doesn't make for less 'stuff' lying around.

Jerry can go into the office next week so we loaded five bags of books into the back of his car. Good to have the heap out of the hall. We are also expecting a delivery on Monday, so we have to have the hall free.

One of these anthologies where you sort of hope that the next story might be better. I gave it 1 1/2 stars, but only because I did finish it. Back on a throw away pile.

Kult und Kunst was certainly deserving of a better reader than me. So I tried to think of who around here I know who
1) reads German
2) at least knows something about liturgy
3) knows more about classical music than I do

I hit on a couple living quite near us. He plays piano for the Methodists, organ as a substitute in a few RC churches, (as well as being part of a French horn ensemble, collects keyboard instruments). His wife is less actively musical, but certainly goes to lots of concerts and such, and I have known her in various church capacities over several decades. He picked it up today, and I feel really good about that.

Well, we have found a sort of solution for now.

The storage facility where we rent a unit had a fire a few weeks ago. We already knew that it was not in our wing, but we did have to go by now that it is open again to check things out. So we took all those bags of books, and they are welcome to sit there for however long as it takes for our usual place to be able to take them. The big advantages: they are not in the way there AND the unit can be reached by elevator with wheeled transport vehicles available. I would have had space here in the attic, but who wants to drag bags of discarded books up and then next year (please, please) back down again.

Of course I expect to collect more, whether or not I actually search for discards, so we may have to go back in a few months.

I've cleared a few cookbooks.
1) Italian regional cooking
I've had this almost 50 years. The way I felt so sophisticated when I bought it (as a college student) just isn't enough reason to keep it any more.)

2) The good cook's companion
This one is only 40 years old. It was useful before we had the web.

3) Erlesenes aus Österreichs Küche
Again 40 years. Bought as a reminder of a special meal. I made the Strawberries with Black Pepper a few times before we realized that strawberries make me break out. I'm not a star cook, nor interested in copying such.

There is method and motivation!

I finally tossed my wok cookbooks collected in college and just after. I think the wok is hanging in the cabin. SIL didn’t know what the wok ring was for when he found it in my broiler drawer.

I needed space on the history shelf and realized that now I can just google any Greek myths I have questions about.

That reminds me of an incident pre-internet. Friends called one evening that their son needed just such a book for a school assignment the next day and he’d failed to mention it before the library closed. Did I have a Greek mythology book? I did.

Hey, in Geneva our landlord asked if, since we were Americans, did we know anything about Apollo 13. The daughter needed information for a school report.
