Well guess I'll start with what I've read this year:

1. The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
2. The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman
3. The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman
4. Between Darkness and Light by Lisanne Norman
5. Acorna's Triumph by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough
6. Acorna's Children - First Warning by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough
7. Acorna's Children - Second Wave by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough
8. Acorna's Children - Third Watch by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough
9. The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley
10. The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley
11. Queen of the Orcs: Royal Destiny by Morgan Howell

I think that's it guess I'll have to read faster if I want to get near 50, but summers coming and that's when I have free time to read.

hi Kitiria,
have you read the Pern series by Anne McCaffrey? It's one I've read over and over again

I've read most of them, there are a few I haven't managed to buy yet. The Harper hall trilogy was the one that got me into fantasy books to begin with.

12. Sunderlies Seeking by Gayle Greeno

I really enjoy these books and wish there were more in the series.

If you haven't read Robin Hobbs you might want to check out The Liveship Traders Trilogy

Edited: Mar 12, 2008, 12:12 am

I have ready all three sets of books, though I didn't read them in the right order not realizing that live ship traders was associated with the Tawny Man and the Farseer series.
Any other suggestions? I'm looking for new writters since the book stores here have such a lousy selection I usually order online, but it's hard to browse for books if you don't know what your looking for.

Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy is pretty good. Melanie Rawn Dragon Prince trilogy is good too, although the second trilogy Dragon star is a bit draggy. I just realized off the top of my head I don't know any "new writers" all my favorites seem to be the oldies :)

8Kitiria
Mar 12, 2008, 9:01 pm

Ahh but they could be new to me... I've read the dragon prince series but never made it through the Dragon star one.

I'll have to check out the Tad Williams set and since the book stores are charging the american price and not the canadian I may just convince myself to buy new books.

McCaffrey's son was at DragonCon last year and he has his first solo book with her approval coming out this year. I think it is neat that he's going to keep his mother's legacy going and add to it.

If it's fantasy you're looking for you could try David Eddings The Belgariad, The Elenium or The Dreamers collections.

Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series and Terry Brooks' Shannara or Landover books.

Robin Hobbs has a new series out now too The Soldier Son Trilogy.

One that I'm reading in my 50 Challenge is Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock.

11beeg
Mar 13, 2008, 3:04 pm

I love Mythago Wood but didn't like the The Soldier son at all. It was dreary and draggy with little glimpses of things that I hoped would take off but never did. Another favorite of mine is The wood wife and most anything by Charles de Lint is good.

Have you read Lavondyss another of Holdstock's Mythago series?

I haven't read The Soldier Son yet but I'm disappointed to hear you didn't care for it much.

13beeg
Mar 13, 2008, 5:28 pm

Yes, I have Lavondyss as well. To tell you the truth I haven't found any one that liked The soldier son, and I'm a hard core fan of Robin Hobbs.

I really liked The Soldier Son, but it wasn't until the middle where I really got hooked, and I was so hooked by the end that it clung to me for several days afterward. I kind of haunted me, it felt like. Robin does such a good job in all of her books by setting up her worlds and cultures so well, you can vividly imagine them. Now I'm reading the next one in that series, and I'm getting that hooked feeling again. I know it seems draggy during the first part, what with all the boring family saga, military school descriptions, and such, but it's all to show the contrast when the magic takes over Nevare, and how completely his old life is lost after that point. I'd say try it again sometime when you are at a loss for what to read, and try and stay with it. Robin makes it worth your while! ;-) Aslo, someone else recommended that Tad Williams trilogy to me today as well, she raved about it.

ok, I'm gonna take your word for it and try the next book in the series :) I hope you check out Tad Williams and let me know what you thought.

I'll Pick it up if it's in our bookstore or if not I'll order it and tell you how I liked it. (I do recall having gotten it out of the library years ago and not finishing it but I don't remember why)

13. The Farthest Seeking by Gayle Greeno

Good story but not really impressed with the delivery. Seemed like too many subplots were going on, concidering it's a 600+ page book sounds odd to say it should have been longer to really do all the different things justice, but at the same time some thing could have been pitched from the book with no great loss letting the main plot line flesh out more and maybe be less rushed at the end.

14. Empire of Ivory by Naomi Novik

Nice easy read book, no real thought required to follow the story. I'm sure I'll buy the next book when I find it.

15. Everything Cats Expect you to Know by Elizabeth Martyn

Kinda cute, full of little factoids about various cats. Not really sure why some things were in the book twice though. That and due to it being british there where a few unusual words (as in not comonnly used in Canada) But over all pretty good.

16. Dragon's Fire by Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey

Typical Pern novel, easy reading but good none the less. It's interwoven with the dragon's kin ocuring at the same time with some instances told from somebody elses point of view.

(what would I do on long weekends with out books?)

17. Everything Dogs Expect You to Know by Karen Bush

Cute book full of facts and stories. I never knew onions and grapes could be fatal to dogs.

18. Wolf's Blood by Jane Lindskold

Not a bad book but like all the rest you know that the main characters are going to find a way to beat certain defeat and come out on top. I enjoyed the first books in the series more then the last few.

19. The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall by Anne McCaffery

Pretty good considering I'm not a big fan of short stories. They always leave too much unfinished but It was worth reading none the less.

20. Nerilka's Story by Anne McCaffrey

Not the first time I've read this one but I couldn't resist picking it up when I saw it at the secondhand book store. I'm a big Pern fan... what can I say?

41. The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon

It was a great book a little disappointed with the ending but overall it was worth it. I had trouble putting it down and stayed up way too late reading it.

Dear Kitiria: I saw that you read Powers that Be in April. I have started reading this book. Another teacher and I are thinking about using this book for our next selection for our Book Club. I teach at a boarding school for high school girls. What do you think? Did you read any of the others in the series yet? So far I am enjoying this book.----Alice

I have read the first trilogy and if I could find the second set locally I'd pick them up too. The next time I order books I'll be including the second trillogy. The books are on my read again list, and have joined my growing collection of do not give away books. (which according to my other half I have way to many of) Could keep me posted on what you think of them?

I would think that it could be a really good book for discussion because it questions what exactly is meant by 'alive'. Hope that helps a little.

51. First Truth by Dawn Cook

Not the best I've ever read by any strech of the imagination but since I bought the whole series already I'm sure I'll finish it.

52. Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan

I KNEW I'd hate the ending but a coworker said he thought I'd enjoy the book. So even knowing how it was going to end I borrowed his copy. And yes it's a good book and yes I cried at the end.
