Justine by Lawrence Durrell 2008

Justine is the first novel in Durrell’s Alexandria Quartet. The four books were published as single slipcased volumes in 2008 and 2009 as well as a four volume set in a combined slipcase. The other books in the series were Balthazar, Mountolive and Clea.

Justine is set in Alexandria, Egypt, in the 1930s, but beyond that it is hard to define. In intricate intimate detail the book documents the life of an un-named narrator and his love affairs, poverty, human interactions, living circumstances and thoughts. It jumps back and forward in time, which is fluid and uncertain. The details of life in Alexandria at that time are fascinating, but his introverted narration meanders aimlessly and sometimes becomes quite droll.

There is a ten page introduction by Peter Porter, while the text takes up a further 203 pages including the end-notes (workpoints). There are ten sepia toned bound-in photos as illustrations. The endpapers and slipcase (25x17cm.) are plain dark brown.

The book is three-quarters bound in orange cloth with a sepia photo printed paper cover.
