Some of us are social distancing, others are sheltering in place - and we are all reading together. I know we all have different dates that the shelter-in-place advisories are up, but I can do at least this weekend's readathon (and more, if Massachusetts extends their date of May 4, which is still up in the air).
Welcome to those returning and any newcomers. The "rules" are pretty loose. We run roughly from Friday afternoon to Sunday at midnight in whatever time zone you choose. I'm on vacation (staycation) this week, so instead of waiting 'til 5 p.m. on Friday I'll probably just count the whole day. And of course some of us are having a harder time with focused reading than others, so don't feel like you have to be reading constantly - that's why we have the "Non-book activities" update too. As little or as much reading as you want to do is perfect.
Here are some things you might keep track of throughout the weekend -

Yes! Count me in! Thanks, Mary, you're a sweetheart.
My son is graduating virtually from college on Sunday so my reading may be a bit less than even my usual meager attempts at reading but I'll do my best.

Our lockdown level slightly relaxed from yesterday, L4 to L3. We can now order online nonessential items and some restaurants/fastfood are finally re-opened for pickup or delivery.

Back for more....
They are talking about reopening, but only gradually. I doubt whether I'll be called back to work until later in May, if then. The only thing I'd REALLY like to change is to have the farmer's market open as scheduled in late May... Our cases are kind of flattening, and mostly due to clusters in senior's homes, but I'd really like to avoid a kind of on-again, off-again, on-again quarantine.

By the way, Massachusetts extended their advisories through May 18, so I'll definitely be around for a couple more weekends. Working from home through the week, readathons on the weekend has become my new routine.

I'm technically reading the following (I have a bad habit of putting books down and forgetting them)
Black England
Black Sun Owen Matthews
Celestial Bodies: Winner of the Man Booker International Prize 2019 Jokha Alharthi
The Dutch House: Longlisted for the Women's Prize 2020 Ann Patchett
Familiar Stranger: A Life between Two Islands Stuart Hall
Girl Meets Boy (Canons) Ali Smith
An Orchestra of Minorities: Shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2019 Chigozie Obioma
The Shadow King Maaza Mengiste
A Stranger City Linda Grant
The New Jim Crow Michelle Alexander
These Truths: A History of the United States
It would be good to finish one or two this weekend. Especially The Shadow King because the loan expires at the e-library soon.

Just finished all my errands and am off to address the damn migraine. Then I shall be here reading late into the night! I'm starting with August Folly by Angela Thirkell and The Good Assassin by Stephan Talty. Very, very different vibes from these... I'm also listening to Contested Will by James Shapiro, about the Shakespeare authorship controversy.
I've been quite productive. Got groceries with neighbors, sorted out some of my quilting fabric and handed it off to someone who's making masks to donate to shelters and other facilities (and gave her most of the giant spool of elastic I ordered...), dropped off stuff with the dry cleaner (who, thank heavens, is still working), handed off my rent to my landlord and talked to him about building some veggie garden planters to the back of the house (he agreed), picked up the AA batteries I need to make my new pencil sharpener work, dealt with edits and queries on a WSJ piece.... I just need to finish unpacking the groceries now!!
See you this evening...

A good Friday to all. Today it looks like a scene from The Road. It's dreary, damp, chilly. The trees are still bare. What's with that?!
I'll be finishing The Hate U Give which I had put aside for a reread of Bossypants (just what I needed in these crazy times). I'll also be reading from A Walk in the Woods a little virtual getaway.
The grocer was out of everything I wanted for the weekend so tonight will be a simple dinner of tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches.
I'll post before bed with a thorough update.

Belated check-in. It's nearly 1 a.m. in Rhode Island, and my migraine went from bad to apocalyptic. I DID get to listen to the lyrical audiobook of Old Ways by Robert Macfarlane, at least. The narrator has an amazing, therapeutically relaxing voice! So, this is Friday's reading, all wrapped up together.
Books read from: 4: The Old Ways: A Journey on Foot by Robert Macfarlane (audio), August Folly by Angela Thirkell; The Last Protector by Andrew Taylor, The Good Assassin by Stephan Talty
Books finished: None yet...

Food: Not much. Toast midday; am about to eat reheated chicken pot pie since migraines mean I can't fuss over cooking. Will have some lemonade with that.
Thoughts: Got an early start to the day and accomplished a lot at least. Dropped off stuff at dry cleaner, met a woman making masks for homeless shelters (she was buying $1 shirts at drycleaner's) and she came by to pick up a whole bunch of surplus quilting fabric and most of the elastic I had. She's going to drop off one of the masks she made for me in exchange! Neighbors went to grocery shop and invited me along. We also went to Walgreen's where I (thankfully) picked up some instant ice packs (which the resident felines still firmly believe contain treats, based on the noise they make.) Finished (nearly) an edit on a WSJ piece running Monday.
Non-book activities: Delighted that it's warming out and the sun tried hard to come out in mid/late afternoon. Battled vicious migraine, so slept. Talked to my father. Sorted out problems with my Verizon phone plan (I changed it, and they suddenly dropped my free minutes to Canada, effective today, but I battled and got them back, and I'm STILL saving $20 a month. Zounds! (AND my data allocation has been boosted...

>55 katiekrug: Thanks Katie. We get the normal ones, but haven't seen those.
I haven't done much reading this afternoon (7pm here).
I did pick up The Shadow King, now 218 of 818 (Borrowbox pages confuse me).
I have put some runner and dwarf beans in pots, moved some decorative grass around the back of the garden (fingers crossed it takes!) and decided that I would move my bookshelf. Oh my word, the dust.
Now collapsed with a book again Big Sky and hoping I don't just nod off after the unaccustomed exercise!

Books finished: None yet...
Time reading: Total two hours, one reading and one listening.
Food: Some toast early this morning when I staggered out of bed to review final edits on a story that's running Monday. Promptly staggered back to bed, as I was groggy and still in some pain. Just had an early dinner -- pre-made/reheated chicken tikka masala, rice and some naan. Good.
Thoughts: How do I get my Aimovig back so I can get my life back?? And why does Minka the velveteen kitten like swiping books onto the ground -- one at a time? Am ecstatic that it's warming up and the sun is out (at least for today).
Non-book activities: Finished dealing with the second of two WSJ articles running Monday. Fed a constant stream of treats to Sir Fergus and Minka. Having lots of weird dreams as I napped/tried to zap migraine.

Hmmm, after yesterday's update, it turned out I felt like doing anything but read. That's OK though, as it's mostly been the other way round the last few weeks. So I did some washing, went for a walk, watched TV, helped my husband sort out his bookshelves, did some very minor gardening, started sorting out my son's room with him, including finally putting up a 3D solar system he was given as a present two years ago, learned how to use my husband's treadmill and played Connect 4 and Snakes & Ladders. Just no reading!
I have managed some this morning though, so here's my Sunday morning update, at 09:07 in the UK:
Books read from: The Evenings, The Diary of a Provincial Lady
Books finished: 0
Pages read: 38
Thoughts: Hoping to be as productive today as I was yesterday, as it definitely improved my mood.
Non-book activities: loads yesterday, but just drinking coffee so far today.

Well, my plans went awry last night for more reading after my last update. I talked to my Little for a couple of hours, took a long walk, had dinner, and did a couple of Sudoku puzzles. I planned on picking up a book when my sister called, and we ended up chatting for a couple of hours and only stopped when I said I had to go to bed. More reading today? We'll see, I had a crappy night's sleep and am hoping for a nap later today.
I'm going to see what I can read in A Conspiracy of Kings before church service and go from there to figure out what the day holds.

Saturday's reading:
Books listened to/read from: 2 --Mansfield Park, Austen, and A Wreath of Roses, Taylor
Books finished: 1 -- A Wreath of Roses; this was a re-read and I definitely got more out of it the second time round.
Time reading & listening: about 5 hours
Food highlight: Went through the Culver's drive-thru and splurged on an order of cheese curds; haven't done that in months
Thoughts: Rather concerned about Dr John Campbell, my daily youtube coronavirus update from the UK. He was very moved, talking about what he feared for third world countries in the coming months. I think he needs a day off from making these videos. It's not all on your shoulders, Dr John.
Non-book activities: drove a bit, updated my April reading, sent spouse out to neigborhood store to pick up 2 additional masks, watched the new Father Brown featuring Flambeau (always a better written episode with Flambeau) and finished up with a Shakespeare & Hathaway repeat.

It is 11:30 a.m. CDT on a beautiful Sunday morning in Alabama.
Books read from: Six Square Metres by Margaret Simons and Dry (audio book) by Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman
Books finished: 2
Time reading: 1 hour
Time posting:
Thoughts: Simons is correct in her observations about gardening being philosophical.
Non-book activities: I finished planting a few more plants and herbs. Watered everything well and figured out what few odds ends of gardening stuff I need to get from the store this week in order to complete everything.
snacks: Starbucks hazelnut cappuccino - dry and 8 grape flavored gummy bears
Total books finished since Readathon began: 16. I started doing this Readathon thing the weekend of April 4, 2020

I finished listening to Dry yesterday and read the last 5 pages of the book this morning rather than waste time listening to it in the car. I also finished reading my short book for the weekend. Six Square Metres is about gardening and it was one of those quiet therapeutic books that feel so good while sitting in the sun reading with a cappuccino easily at hand. Perfect setting to read this book and I am sorry that the book ended and so ended the experience. I hope tomorrow will be just as nice out in the sun.

I have that book and plan on reading it this summer. I was somewhat disappointed in the first book, but realized that it was not a novel but a series of prequel short stories. Have a good day reading. It is perfect weather for sitting out in the sun and reading here in Alabama. This time of year is one of the few things I like about Alabama.

Snacks: lunch...stuffed shells, beet salad, not awful
Thoughts: Sixty-five-year-old sci fi short story that first appeared in Galaxy magazine made into an Audiobook for YouTube...it's a famous classic story, and as with all Asimov, I liked it okay but did not love it.
Non-book activities: Eating lunch. Noodling over my review of Old Food. How much of my exasperation is my innate loathing of poetry and how much is the author's failure to communicate his point (whatever that may have been)?

Books finished: 1 - The Invention Of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd
Time reading: About 5 hours from Friday to now
Time posting: 2:10pm EST
Snacks: Lunch was an eggless egg salad sandwich
Thoughts: I tried to prioritize reading this weekend and it worked, I finished one book, almost finished another, and I'm around halfway through the third. By the way, I just wanted to say I love reading everyone's updates and seeing what everyone else is reading and doing during this quarantine. Sending good vibes to those of you who seem like you could use them!
Non-book activities: Some yard work and a long walk yesterday since it was really nice weather. Today is cloudy and generally a bit more of a lazy day. I might work on budgeting stuff later, reading Evicted has got me thinking about money. It is strange how appropriate things you read in books can be. I found this in Six Square Meters earlier this morning. It is all about supply trains.
"so it is with supermarkets and the city. The trucks bring the produce in. From the supermarket, it travels out in plastic bags, and spray bottles, and tins, and puniest, broken down into modest amounts consumable by individuals and families in the course of a week, finding's its way into everyone's fridge, and then into the gut. And then into the rest of our bodies. Then out again, as we give a crap." pg. 117

A successful readathon for me, just didn't get to my audiobook as the rain curtailed any walking this weekend.

>115 PaulCranswick: Thanks, Paul, but it's not as impressive as it may appear, lol. I was almost finished with Lucifer's Hammer when we started, three of the others were novella length, two others weren't particularly long and the remaining book, Naked in Death, was a very quick read. And listening to audio books while I worked on projects really helped with the total hours.

It is 11:30 a.m. CDT on a typical summer morning in Alabama. Today promises to be the start of hot and humid. I turned on the AC last night because the inside temperature in my house was 78 degrees. That is too hot for me to sleep comfortably, so time for the AC! It was another good weekend for me at the Social Distancing Readathon. Here are my final statistics for the weekend.
Books read from: Six Square Metres by Margaret Simons, Dry (audio book) by Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman, Packing for Mars by Mary Roach
Books finished: 2
Time reading on Sunday: 3 hours
Thoughts: Packing for Mars is going to be a quick read and I wonder why people like this author's work so much. It seems like science lite.
Non-book activities: I finished planting a few more plants and herbs. Watered everything well and figured out what few odds ends of gardening stuff I need to get from the store this week in order to complete everything.
Total books finished since Readathon began: 16. I started doing this Readathon thing the weekend of April 4, 2020
Total read from since I began the Readathon: 25

I have to say that I am really enjoying this work at home. I work about half the time because there is so much I can't do from home. I know it will be a mess when I get back to work, but I will deal with that when the time comes. Even though the state of Alabama has called off the quarantine, Tuscaloosa hasn't, so there is some confusion about what we should be doing. I am going to continue to stay at home.
I am ready for another weekend Readathon, so put me in the list for next week.
