CAVEAT – During the Summer Sale starting on 24 June this post will often be out of date and likely to provide incorrect information. Two causes for this: the sale will see a rapid increase in demand for some books and the FS website may not record changes in real time or accurately. Even if it does, my once per day updating of this summary will just show a snapshot and will quickly be out of date.
BACKGROUND - I keep this post updated most days with what the Folio Society state is the 'Last Chance to Buy' their own published books. Excluded from this summary are the FS Shakespeare Letterpress volumes and those books the FS sell from other publishers. However I do include the other Folio Society Limited Editions on this page where there are fewer than 100 copies.
You can look up what is there: https://www.foliosociety.com/uk/miscellaneous/last-chance-to-buy
Note that The Hobbit is now back in print. The Handmaid's Tale is being reprinted and should be available again in late July.
As at 21 June at 1830 in the UK the changes from my previous updating position for non-limited Folio Society books was as follows:
Once there was a War - no change at 58 copies
Three Men in a Boat - 20 to 19 copies
No Cloak, No Dagger - 65 to 64 copies
Shakespeare by Burgess - no change at 78 copies
The Bull from the Sea - no change at 86 copies
The best-selling book since yesterday's update was again surprisingly a Limited Edition. The Limited Editions which per the Folio Society have fewer than 100 copies left are:
Doctor Zhivago - 49 to 47 copies
Studies from Nature - 19 to 11 copies
Hansel and Gretel - 49 to 47 copies
The Pearl Manuscript - no change at 45 copies
The Door in the Wall - no change at 59 copies
The Fine Press Classics - no change as still showing there are fewer than 100 copies left
The best seller out of these recently has usually been Dr Zhivago. However 'Studies from Nature' was again the day's best seller.
Books recently now 'Sold out' and mainly shown on the second page of the FS Last chance to Buy section are:
'Pirates'
The Vikings
The Handmaid's Tale
The Diary of a Nobody
Mort
The Duke's Children LE
The Twelve Caesars
Colditz
The Warden
Loving
Tales from the 1,001 Nights LE
The Snow Leopard
The Middle Parts of Fortune
The Martian Chronicles
The Ripley Novels
Brighton Rock
Relativity
And Then There were None!
The Anglo-Saxons
The Tiger in the Smoke

I have updated the opening post for today's figures per the FS.
Changes of possible interest:
The Snow Leopard number fell from 31 to 23.
The Vikings remaining copies are now quantified at 43.
The Tiger in the Smoke has sold out
Something Wicked This Way Comes is added with 59 copies left

>5 Steventon: Thanks for this list. I ordered Snow Leopard which was down to 19 and Something Wicked which was at 50 a few hours ago. Crossing my fingers that I receive Snow Leopard as I've found inventory is unreliable once the quantity goes below 20 or so.

It seems "Last chance to buy" page is unreliable. I was in a impression that it list the books, which have counts lower than 100, somewhat reliably. It didn't list the Vikings and start the counting after 50. I don't even see "Something Wicked This Way Comes" in the list at the moment.

>7 Mujaddadi: I don't even see "Something Wicked This Way Comes" in the list at the moment.
Strictly speaking, "47 left" doesn't necessarily mean "last chance to buy", since they might be planning to reprint it. But sure, the "Last chance to buy" page is unreliable, as are the counters. Putting a Sold Out book on a last chance to buy page says it all.

Hopefully Folio Society will see your comments and try to improve the page.
Speaking to booksellers one of their main areas of work each day is trying to control the stock figures. Books are replaced in the wrong places; new books are fingered by customers and are no longer all that new; both tall and short books have to be stored separately; staff may not update the stock records accurately etc etc.

>9 Steventon: That's likely to get a little more complicated, at least for Waterstones staff as, when they reopen, they intend to put books which have been handled by browsing customers into quarantine for 72 hours. Best of luck with that...

Yet again i must bow and buy, i wish i knew about `Wicked` at the time of my last order. Well, time to also add the Christie books and get it over and done .. no more surprises .. yet .. i beg of you FS, oh, i do, i do, i certainly do .. !

I'm annoyed that Wickedness did not feature in the low stock count sufficiently early. I wanted to buy that book and since it was published only in 2019 I assumed it would still be around for sometime. Hope FS does a better job with their stock counter.
22Pellias
<21 I would have lost out too if it was not for librarything. But, if you were around here the time it was announced low stock then you only have yourself to blame though .. if you want something you buy it, if you are interested in something you fence sit. Didn`t want it bad enough i guess ;)

Likewise, I would have missed out too if I had not spotted a comment saying there were only about 100 copies left. The other thread was flooded with political ramblings, so it was quite hard to spot it.
I placed the order immediately as I'm a huge fan of Ray Bradbury.
The thing is I got an email from the Folio Society today telling me that my country has put into effect a near embargo. So I will have to bear with significant delay. I don't mind waiting. I just hope the books aren't being smashed here and there.

>22 Pellias: Pellias I had a lot of books published before 2019 to buy and I assumed I have time to buy this one. Just last week I bought some 12 books, 3 from the last chance to buy list. This book was nowhere there at that time. I did see FS's low stock warning on twitter but I cannot just keep paying for express shipping at the drop of the hat especially with the additional 50% customs duty I have to pay. I already paid 490 pounds on those books and I have to pay an additional 245 pounds as customs. Plus express shipping takes 2 months to arrive. My book woes are endless. sigh..
29bookish_elf
>23 Kainzow: Kainzow Good that you were able to get it. I really like the design of that book. If it is any consolation express shipping takes 2 months to arrive in my country plus I have a nice 50% customs to pay and there is a high chance many of those books will have some dents due to the rough handling and long transit. I placed an order of 12 books in May and will be surprised if it turns up before June end. We just have to be patient and read the other FS books that we have, it will turn up someday. :-)

- Ghost stories

Fans of Terry Pratchett should take note that Mort has now been added to this list. Thanks to the comments of this group I've become a fan myself and purchase both Mort and Small Gods. Given the fact that the Discworld site has take to issuing its own deluxe editions there is no way to be sure if these books will be reprinted. Frankly, I prefer the Folio versions to the various deluxe editions being offered directly by the Discworld site. While I like my Occult Edition of Good Omens, I don't want a series of books that size.

>42 SF-72: they do publish regular illustrated editions of normal size. They have one for Good Omens and one upcoming for Guards! Guards!, both of which have the same illustrations as the large format versions. They come in regular trade and deluxe (though pricey) slipcase versions.

>43 jsg1976:
According to their own information there are fewer illustrations in the small editions of Good Omens - 12 instead of 17. I haven't found that information myself for Guards! Guards! but someone here confirmed it was the same there. Since to me the illustrations are the main attraction (there are already cheaper, but unillustrated hardcover versions out there) I'm not at all happy with the reduction of the illustrations in those. So I end up with the much too large books, but I'd be much more comfortable with something smaller.

Drat. I may need to place another order before the sale now that The Hobbit has a counter. I feel fairly confident that it's popular enough to be reprinted, but it's also been on my wishlist for ages and I wouldn't want to miss it. Given how long its been in print there aren't a lot of copies on the secondary market.
50wdripp
>49 SF-72: Ah. Well, I gave in last night and ordered it from FS. The counter is now down to 75 (it was 80 when I ordered) so I suspect these last copies will sell quickly.
The Last Chance to Buy section with counters has coaxed two orders out of me for full price books, which doesn't happen that often. I really hope FS takes note that this is an effective sales strategy, and keeps it up to date.

I agree with your comment. There are many FS books I wish to buy but I can usually find an alternative use for my limited funds. I assume I can and will buy the book later. So this Last Chance screen has forced me to spend money to get FS books before they went. I should add that I have not been asked to start this thread by the FS and am not an employee of their's.

I'll probably order Mort soon.

Never mind guys,
When (in my dreams) I get around to publishing it, the 'wcarter memorial infinity library' will have as many stories as required to host every book that Folio have ever imagined. A sort of cross between Unseen University and Dream of the Endless's libraries. But then, as we all know, in L-Space, every library in space and time is one. All you need to knuckle your way between them is librarian knowhow and a plentiful supply of bananas.

I bought Mort and had to remove Handmaid's Tale from my basket.
I already have the latter, but my copy has a tiny, tiny blemish that I can't unsee. I was thinking about buying a replacement, but then I reminded myself that it is the interior of the book that counts. The blemish doesn't undo the experience I had when I read the book in Folio edition around 2 years ago.
And oh well, there's the sale coming coming soon!

>85 folioaddict: Another three copies of The Handmaid's Tale have gone since your post a few hours ago. Of course, there's a slim chance that a) there will be copies left by the time of the sale, and b) it will be included in the sale. But if that slim chance comes to fruition, surely the remaining copies will be snapped up in minutes. If you're happy to pay full price plus shipping for this, then I personally wouldn't risk waiting. I already have a copy, otherwise I would certainly be buying now. (But I'm lucky enough to be in the UK, so shipping costs aren't problematic.)
Of course, there's always the chance they'll reprint this. But no guarantees. And maybe they'll get the rights to The Testaments in future and reprint both in series with a new design. But given a choice between buying now and waiting for the sale, I would buy now.

Indeed, there's a chance it'll get reprinted eventually.
I remember when Lord of the Flies and Clockwork Orange were sold out. They were eventually reprinted quite soon.
Same for Handmaid's Tale. I bought it around 2014 (2 years after its publication). Then it sold out.
Then, I'm not sure exactly when, it reappeared.
Given that it's rarely been on sale (at most you get 20% off), it sold pretty well for the Folio Society, and I'm sure they're aware of this.

Looks like I'll miss out on the "Pirates" book. Was hoping it will last till the sale, so that I can make one huge order. For me it just doesn't make sense to buy a single book. 42.95 + 45 (shipping) + 23 (customs) = 110.95 pounds. At least I need to amortize the shipping over several books. Also express shipping can take anywhere between 3 to 6 months.

I also noticed, that if you’re buying only one book your shipping is $16 plus change, but increases to $30 if buying more than one book. So, I guess it’s not all that bad and I can definitely tolerate $16 rather than $30.

>94 folio_books: I know! I’m not sure if this makes me feel better or worse. At least they didn’t buy up the whole stock, but at the same time it always shocks that people will spend 50% than buying direct.
Although given the recent crazy prices for recently sold out Folio’s, £65 is probably a great deal!

Yes, I agree - the moment Mort sold out on the FS website, this went from being a con to a good deal!

Hello folks,
Just where does one find the "Low Stock Page" and the "Last chance to buy pages." The only way I find a low stock item is by checking the specific book page.

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Attwood is now down to 12 copies per the Folio Society.

Thank you for adding the Limited Editions!
Any reason for not including the Letterpress Shakespeare? I’m not fussed either way, just curious.

Nobody appears to want to buy them!
When I monitored their unsold number on the Last chance page copies did not reduce.
If the Society puts them in a sale I think they would do well.

The Handmaid’s Tale is sold out. Odd that it was removed from the "last chance to buy" pages som days ago
111Steventon
I have not spoken to the Folio Society but it could be that they feel that members of this group see this thread, check my daily update at the top and then decide to buy a book they might have otherwise let pass.
My interests are in 18th century history and literature but in compiling the daily update I am forced to think about books which I had not even noticed before, some otherwise unlikely books then catch my attention and I then buy them.
Maybe the Society would prefer us to be perusing their complete range of books rather than focussing on the last chance to buy books that are often very popular anyway.
So to pick up on r observation, the Society may have thought that The Handmaid's Tale did not need any marketing on this thread and moved it to a less obvious part of their website.

I suspect that the most likely explanation is simply a website glitch, since those happen only too frequently, it seems. I get the impression that many FSD members are more familiar with the ins and outs of the FS website than the FS is itself!

A rough count sir, 310 FS books are currently available. Since it is the Summer Sale, and plenty of books have sold out recently, it could be a dicey bet that this will be an extraordinary sale. Anything can happen, but I'd expect a weak sale, so when it isn't, you can prepare to meet your most contemptible money spending self because some fantastic releases should make an appearance if Folio wishes to let loose.

Hmm...with all these books sold out or almost gone, I wonder what on earth they will have left for the summer sale? All the titles we just bought over the past year at full price?

It seems as if the books from the catalog that are selling out far outweigh the number of the recent additions to the catalog through newly published books, leading to a reduced overall count of books in the catalog. I am hoping this means more new books being published in fall than is usual rather than a reduced catalog becoming the norm.

No new counters today, but those might be added manually (more could show up tomorrow). I've split the low stock up in two groups: critically low and low. Critically low indicates that more books were sold the past 24 hours than the remaining stock. These are therefore expected to sell out soon.
Also a quick note on the Kama Sutra LE: this has been updated to more than 600 sold from more than 550 sold (fewer than 150 remain).

Regarding Mystery Books:
I just noticed this line item, which was the mystery book I received from my last order. As Folio progressed through it's stack of mystery books, we were reliably watching titles come and go as if they were in some sort of ordered pile. It would seem that Folio did not use all remaining stock for any of the titles it gave away.
If anyone less busy than I is bored, it would be interesting to see the before-and-after counts of each of the identified mystery books, from before the sale to the time of the start of the Summer sale. In other words, roughly how many copies were set aside to be mystified and subsequently given away? (Obviously, anyone directly ordering any paying for any of these titles would muddle up the counts a little.)
Edit: Nevermind - I didn't realize that there were two so similarly named books (...Medieval England, ...Elizabethan England)

I noticed that The Folio Book of Ghost Stories is shooting down as much as any title. I didn't realise that thes kind of anotholgies were so popular, though looking more closely the stories do seem well selected and the illustrations are excellent. It's currently standing on 31. Does anyone who owns this one recommend it? It hasn't been much discussed on the sale pages.

Well, you may want to actually figure out where the box will fit (being 16"× 12¼"), not just the book. While I really like the book on its own, it is the whole box that makes it even more special :) And yeah - it is not a heavy book - just big :) Mine lives on top of a bookcase - I just do not have shelf that is high enough for that (and gets dusted regularly...) :)

As for the Ghost Stories book - I even ordered a copy. For some reason, horror stories lend themselves well to this mixed author format better than other types of short stories. They make for a fun read during October/Fall, especially when time is short.

>171 wdripp: yay!!! I was sad to have missed that one. One of those where I was on the fence several times ... almost pulled the trigger last 1/2 off sale (last two sales if I recall correctly) ... but every time I read reviews (of the book as a whole ... not on the FS version ... which I think looks amazing) ... I would hear how the writing style was often frustrating and long winded. Making me sit on the fence ... interested because it looks like a lovey version of the book and being always up for a challenge of exploring a unique writing style.
But ultimately and foolishly not pulling the trigger due to those harsh reviews on the writing style.
I will not miss the next release ... glad to hear FS is giving us all another chance!

Mansfield Park - down to 101 pieces.
Christ, the Last chance to buy is completely pointless to follow, isn't it. It won't show about 5 titles that are close to the last 100 pieces yet it shows already sold out books. I'd assume there is an algorithm coded into the site to detect this but I'm starting to think it might just be some poor FS employee doing the basket method for every single title day by day...

It will be interesting to see in the next few days whether the above Limited Editions which have few copies left see sales momentum pick up as last chance buyers and dealers move to grab copies.
183Fierylunar
>182 Steventon: I wouldn't expect too much movement, both Zhivago and Hansel and Gretel have slowed down. The only reason The Door in the Wall has sold more copies was the low stock email FS sent out. Then again, I've said that before and see LEs sell out within a week of that statement. Time will tell. As always: if you want a book, buy it before it reaches single digits. At that point, it's a free for all.

Thanks Fierylunar. I suppose so, and on a graph it's unlikely to be an even diagonal line, there'll always be fits and starts, but that's quite the nosedive.
If anyone's wavering on Revelations of Divine Love, I got it after a little hesitation (it had been on my wishlist but something of an also-ran). It's beautifully designed and entirely in keeping with the subject. The calligraphy on the cover and beginning each chapter is beautifully done, the font (English Engravers) is delicate and makes the whole thing feel gentle, quiet and somehow feminine. I'd be very pleased with it at full price and at £19 I feel like I stole it :-)

>189 Retronaut78: There is usually a bit of a dive when the counter appears, then a slower, more stable descend followed by a dive when the stock gets really low. Fahrenheit 451 and some others just have the initial dive go so deep that there is no 'slow descent'.

There are 123 pieces of A Farewell to Arms. Exactly a week ago it was over 230 so that is getting depleted fast too. Equally, The Exorcist is at 118 pieces, a week ago it was over 270.

Are FS having an exceptionally good month, or is this a normal rate of book buying? I know the sale helps and tends to lead to books selling out, but it's the speed that seems striking right now.

Pretty normal during 50% off sales -- and I suspect this gets a few additional bumps from people who did not buy the usual books in March-June due to the distribution channels issues.

Agreed, this seems pretty normal for a sale month. It may be slightly better than normal just because many people are either still staying home or still have some reading momentum that developed from when they were staying home.

I see that Folio has added all three volumes of the Cambridge History of the American Civil War to the sale. They have had some late adds from the Oxford Press in previous sales, and normally in low quantities. As I had ironically been looking for a new history of the Civil War, I went ahead and purchased a set. After my purchase, it looks like they have 28 copies remaining.
Fierylunar, I know your counts are normally for FS publications, but thought I would throw this out there for others who may be wondering.

>199 AnnieMod:, thanks for noting. I must have completely missed them in my first several passes. However, now that you mention it, I see it is also in the catalog. I tend to skim over the non-FS books, simply in an effort to reduce temptation on things I probably had no idea existed, so I obviously missed these.

Unless my memory's playing tricks again, I bought my copy of Master and Margarita in a sale - as with some other books that rose sharply in resale value once out of print, it wasn't an especially good seller when readily available. A few people very keen to buy even at inflated prices don't necessarily signi9fy sufficient demand to make a reprint a good seller.
Northanger Abbey's in quite a different case, a reliable seller in itself as well as helping to maintain demand for the other Austen volumes by keeping alive the availability of a near-complete set.

Me: I am annoyed that Handmaid’s Tale is back in stock because I rushed to buy it when it was low stock and clearly wasted an opportunity to buy another book on my list had I held off on this one to a time when my list was smaller.
Also Me: I wish they’d reprint the Foundation Trilogy, Man in the High Castle, Martian Chronicles, Small Gods...

I feel you. I bought Something Wicked this Way Comes some months ago and had to pay ROW shipping for a single book. Only to learn that it will be back in stock later on.(At the time I was also buying a lot of soon-to-be-out-of-stock books individually, each time paying the hefty shipping price, so saving some money would have been welcome).
Out of the books you listed, Man in the High Castle is the only one I missed. But I'm optimistic that it will come back at some point. For the Foundation trilogy, I think somebody said it's in the plans of the FS to reprint it. As for Martian Chronicles and Small Gods, I have no idea.
Small Gods is too beautiful a book to remain out of stock. I'm sure at some point it will be reprinted. But I'm not sure.

Could it be a casualty of the punched paper tape typesetting problem, or is it too recent? It is such a 20th century classic that it does seem odd not to have reappeared.

It is a real shame that i hesitated for so long. I thought i would wait till the sale and save myself the shipping costs. Now i have to just do without because there is no way in hell i am paying the secondary market prices. Such a shame. Those were very gorgeous looking books.

>238 folio_books: One thing to keep in mind is that it's not a regular Folio. Definitely a Fine edition. Beautiful book, one of Folio highlights, really. Larger book about the size of Beowulf, beautiful textured full-cloth binding, silver page tops, ribbon marker, nice endpapers, very nice typesetting; color illustrations printed on thick and textured paper are a highlight. I was happy to pay full price for it.

>242 folio_books: When I want a book but at the same time don't feel like paying the price they're asking for I go to goodreads and deliberately look up the reviews that tore it down. It kind of helps putting it into perspective, that it probably isn't the best book ever written and that I don't need to own all the books in the world.
With FS I absolutely know I am drawn superficially to the design aspect, the fact I am a huge fan of illustration and discovering its existence is a complete nightmare. So I have to remind myself there are certain genres and authors that affect me enough to actually reread a book multiple times. Otherwise, I don't see much point collecting things I might read once (if that) when for that I might as well use kindle or go to the library. FS complicates things because it's suddenly not only about the writer but the illustrator as well. And I definitely have some favourites there too.

You're absolutely right. The illustrators complicate thematter substantially, as does the design. Having previously read Atlas Shrugged, i am not sure i would've chosen to buy an expensive copy of it. But what with the sale and the Balbusso twins, i just ended up getting it. And now i am intensely tempted to get Lord of the Flies and Handmaid's tale. Jut trying desperately to control myself.

>244 sekhmet0108: Do you have their version of Pride and Prejudice as well? I've resolved myself to only ever get a book where I enjoy both the artwork and the writing. They take up too much space to keep one just for the art alone. Unless one thinks of it as an investment, I suppose. I mentally pre-filtered the genres I don't need to own a copy of, with a few exceptions - a lot of non-fiction which unless to do with art I can read on kindle, crime and thriller which to me is a one time read. And horror because I always regret having read that the second it gets dark so I know those illustrations I can't appreciate because I'd do my best to flip through them as fast as possible. That's the one genre that shouldn't get illustrated at all...
I did get Lord of the Flies, that book shook me as a teenager, along with A Clockwork Orange and The Cement Garden. The toughest to resist is children's literature because I feel like that is an investment into my imaginary future kid which doesn't make it entirely selfish. (It is, I just love to have the excuse.)

For those who do not live in England and who are unfamiliar with Eric Newby (as in Love and War in the Apennines) he was a wonderful travel writer and his books are a delight.
The Apennines book is strongly recommended as is 'The Last Grain Race' and some of his others. They are witty, warm and wonderful.

I do not own a copy of P&P in any format. I have the other 5 Jane Austen novels in the read leather Easton Press editions. I am not much of a completionist, but i was thinking i might just get the same type of P&P to have it match the rest of the set. Or go for an old Franklin Press edition (i like the artwork in that one)...worst case scenario, i will get the current FS one. I like the illustrations in that a lot. It is by the Balbusso sisters after all. (i hate myself for having missed out on Eugene Onegin!) But i would never collect that set. It has illustrations from one of my least favourite illustrators (Jonathan Burton).
Since i only collect one copy per book, this is an important decision.

Every Man for Himself is at 126 so that will get there soon. And my guess is that by the end of the sale Empire of the Sun will be gone (went down by nearly 200 in 3 weeks) as well as The Fables of Aesop (went down by nearly 350 in 3 weeks).

That's funny, I actually dislike his illustrations in Nineteen Eighty-Four so much I couldn't place an order despite it being one of my favourite novels. It just reminds me of some indie computer game with dodgy perspective.
On the other hand, I think he did a good job with the Hitchhiker's Guide series so it's not a universal dislike of his work, I guess the style of some illustrations just doesn't work me for everything.

Oh yes, i wanted to buy Nineteen Eighty- Four a few years ago and the illustrations (along with the frontispiece) dissuaded me from buying it. I did not even know that that book was illustrated by Burton as well. His work in A Game of Thrones is atrocious. Just horrendous. His interpretation of the scenes in the book to the actual drawing of them...really terrible. That is what stopped me from buying A Clash of Kings. I can't get past it.
What befuddles me is that there have to be 1000s of incredible artists out there. Why on Earth does FS go to the same one for such a wide variety of books! Jane Austen, Game of Thrones, Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, Nineteen eighty-four.
I am never again buying anything done by Burton.

Different people will like different illustrators. I know the Omar Rayyan illustrations for Small Gods and Mort are loved by plenty of FSDs, but to my wife and me (big fans of Discworld) they are thoroughly off-putting. Does that mean they are factually terrible? No, they just rub our taste the wrong way.

Interesting, I haven't realized all these books were done by the same bloke! I think his Hitchhiker illustrations and binding designs are just great. I think 1984 illustrations are fine, I'm just not interested in the book because I have the earlier set of Orwell's novels. But Northanger Abbey - I find the illustrations hideous; they look like stills from a Japanese cartoon.

Can only concur: just bought Love and War in the sale to go with copies of Last Grain Race and Short Walk that I already have (and have much enjoyed). These are the sorts of books that I love from the FS - neat, lovely binding, highly readable (I'm talking design not the content, which is too!). Full price is just a bit too full nowadays, otherwise they would be almost instant buys for me. Others of the same ilk recently have included Chatwin, Thubron and Dalrymple, but Newby remains a strong favourite.
BTW, on the fiction front, I'd love FS to do an edition of 'On the Black Hill'.

Japanese Tales has been on my wishlist since forever. My plan was to buy it during non-sale period, as a one-off.
Now it is running out during the sales! I'm so tempted to pick it despite already spending so much on books lately. :|

I’m feeling the exact same way but I’ve also spent so much on books lately I can’t justify another folio order for Japanese tales because then I’d be tempted to pick up 2001, Lord of the Flies ect before they go out of stock and then my wallet will be in great distress. Although the enablement on here is strong for Japanese tales and there’s no doubt it’s an amazing production and beautiful book I’m just hoping for a find on the secondary market one day or a reprint both unlikely but a fool can hope.

The book is beautiful. The illustrator is world class.

I just don't know if I should go for it. If it were a novel, it would be a no brainer. But as >278 bookish_elf: pointed out, you're essentially paying 80 pounds for folk stories.

1. And why should a novel cost more or be more worthy of the Folio treatment than a collection of stories? I'm genuinely curious. There are many story collections far superior than many a novel.
2. >278 bookish_elf: is actually wrong. These are NOT folk stories. This is a collection of medieval stories written mainly between 1100 and 1350 for the Japanese aristocracy by educated writers. Most of the stories in this particular collection published by FS are drawn from two collections that are considered masterpieces of the Japanese medieval "tale literature". They mostly deal with religion, the court and aristocracy, legends, and popular stories. But even popular stories are not folk tales, as Royall Tyler says in his introduction:
"Although they do include popular elements, the medieval collections are not folk literature. The compilers were highly literate, and particularly conscious of history."
As a matter of fact, while I usually don't read 99% of introductions, introduction in this FS edition, written by Royall Tyler, the translator and compiler of this volume, is very good. It's interesting and informative, and helps placing the stories in their context.

After seeing your comment, I gave in and bought it.
Folio should give you a commission, haha.
After being a student for 4 years and not being able to buy many Folio books, I made a wishlist at the beginning of the year and was determined to work on it as the year goes. Already in March and April, I was buying books that were running out of stock and that were on my wishlist. Then came the sale, which enabled me to get quite a few books I wanted at half price (I even managed to get Candide).
And now, after Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Japanese Tales is my second 75-pound book. (Well, I have Dune, but got it in a giveaway)
In short, at some point I'd have bought it anyway, given it was on my wishlist. But after spending so much lately, I was on the fence.
Now my wallet REALLY needs some time to recover.

I have nothing against Japanese Tales. Its just about opportunity cost. When you buy one book you don't buy another. I would much prefer to buy The Greatest Benefit to Mankind or East of Eden at the same price than this. I'm not going to buy something just because it is running low stock. I read a couple of stories on Amazon and it did not appeal to me.

I am in the exact same boat. Already received my sale order and didn't even consider Japanese Tales because I thought the published price was too steep for my interest level and figured I would buy it in a future sale. Now I am wishing I put it in the sale order and saved the $16 shipping. Then when the stock got down to under 50, my FOMO took over I placed an order and paid the uneconomical single book shipping (regular though and not express). I just hope it arrives undamaged as there are no more copies to replace it.

Okay, so I caved in and finally ordered Japanese Tales when it got down to 30 left yesterday. It arrived about half an hour ago with a large prang on the box corner (heart sinks) but Folio's fabulous fabled packaging saved the day - the books (The Folio Book of Children's Poetry, if you're curious) entirely intact. Thanks to Ligita for her careful packing. I was rather surprised and very pleased to note the return of the packing slips (though a reduced size). I like to know who to thank.

Me too. My opinion on the price hasn't changed. I thought it was too high at £75 when they first published it. When they increased it to £79.95 it was still too high, plus a bit. It's been on my sale list (ie buy when it's in a sale) from day one. The book itself is gorgeous, but I knew that from day one, too. As the counter crept inexorably towards zero I had to ask myself if I thought there was any chance of getting it on the secondary market, a) below Folio's (to my mind unreasonable) price, and b) within the foreseeable future, given I'm not getting any younger. A resounding "no" on both counts. So here we are. The book meets all my expectations. I just wish I could have acquired it at my price.
Edited to add: If anyone is interested in the book I've just checked and it's down to the last one.

And I might be the only one in the world still waiting for April orders. (For folio books)

>312 sdg_e: I would have bought the book if the other non-fiction by Tom Holland was reasonably expected to be published as well. I think they will stop at two and therefore I have collected all his non-fiction books in US trade hardcover. I bought all but the last one (Dominion) secondhand at the same cost of Rubicon and Persian Fire by FS. Mind you, that’s for six books.
