My state announced their reopening plan as of this morning, and while libraries are in Phase 1 (still closed to patrons), I should be good for at least one if not more readathons, as we'll most likely be closed over the weekend.
Welcome to those returning and any newcomers. The "rules" are pretty loose. We generally run from Friday at 5 p.m. to Sunday at midnight in whatever time zone you choose. This weekend being a holiday weekend in the U.S., we've decided to extend through Monday. And I will join in with the early birds this week, as I took Friday off and after a week of meetings will very much be looking forward to using it as a recharge day.
And of course some of us are having a harder time with focused reading than others, so don't feel like you have to be reading constantly - that's why we have the "Non-book activities" update too. As little or as much reading as you want to do is perfect.
Here are some things you might keep track of throughout the weekend -

I will plan to join in again and hope that I do better than I did last weekend. I do have Memorial Day off so that will help!

I'm in. As of now I'm scheduled to work on Monday, but I'm off this coming Saturday and Sunday.
5Carmenere
Count me in! I love the extended readathon for the holiday weekend. Must find something fabulous to start off summer reading.
6PaulCranswick
i'm in too. It is the end of Ramadan here so I will also be on holiday on Monday.
8PawsforThought
I'm planning on taking part again.
As I mentioned on the last thread, this is a long weekend in Sweden as we have Ascension Day on Thursday which is a public weekend. And because it's on a Thursday, Friday becomes a "squeeze day" (squeezed in between a public holiday and a weekend) and we have that day off too. And because Wednesday is the day before a public holiday (a "red day" as we call it), we have a half day off. So I should theoretically have a lot of reading time this weekend, but as the past month has shown, that doesn't necessarily result in me actually getting much reading done. We're going to our summer house for at least one day to prepare for summer (turn the water on, get started in the garden, etc.) and we'll probably go orienteering a bit again. But hopefully I'll read a bit too.
Not quite sure what I'll be reading, but I want to at least have made some headway in A Handful of Dust by the end of the week.

I got distracted by other things the weekend just gone and barely did any reading or updating, but I'm hoping to join in properly this weekend. Monday is a public holiday in the UK too, which helps.

>2 richardderus: I wish, Richard!
>8 PawsforThought: Ooh, I like the "squeeze day." I didn't realize you got both Thursday and Friday off in your initial explanation. I thought it was much like what we do with several holidays that fall on weekdays and we take the Monday off and call it "observed." (Presidents Day in February is an example of this, we don't celebrate the exact day anymore.) Having both days off is much nicer.

I'm in again, and while I'm sounding like a broken record now, hopefully will be able to accomplish more reading!!
15PawsforThought
>13 bell7: Yeah, it's nice. It was especially nice during Christmas and New Years last year because Christmas Eve (which is the day we celebrate) was on a Tuesday which meant we had Monday as a squeeze day, Tuesday off, Wednesday off, Thursday off and then another squeeze day on Friday, then the weekend followed by another squeeze day on Monday and then Tuesday and Wednesday (New Year's) off again. And since the following Monday was Twelfth Night we had that off too. If you took two days off you'd get more than two weeks off.

Following the instructions of one of my city's loveliest librarians, the OverDrive loan of The Sacrament by Olaf Olafsson was effected with the absolute minimum of fuss and bother. The county's instructions, which Julie read with me, are *use*less* but she told me what to do and in less than 50 seconds I had the book on my Kindle.
Lesson: Always, always, always ask a librarian.
So that will be my first read of the 'athon.

9.30pm Friday night in Auckland, New Zealand
Well, no update as I haven't read anything except an article in 'The New Zealand Genealogist' magazine.
I'll post again in the morning and hopefully I'll have read something before I go to sleep.

I will start early - I find that I prefer reading non-fiction for some reason- I have started some excellent novels but have put them aside for To End Wars A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion 1914-1918 by Adam Hochschild

I will not be in on this Readathon or the next one - daughter in this weekend, visiting my mother the next - but I wanted to wish everyone "Happy Reading!"

So, my preliminary list of books to read...
I'm going to try to finish The Overstory by Richard Powers.
I've started reading an e-galley of Double Agent by Tom Bradby and A Sin of Omission by Marguerite Poland, also library version of Treachery by S.J. Parris. I've got about an hour of the audiobook of Excellent Women by Barbara Pym left.
Books I'd like to get through over the weekend:
Death in Provence by Serena Kent
The Lark Ascending: The Music of the British Landscape by Richard King
Rage of Vultures by Barry Unsworth
My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Otessa Moshfegh
Conviction by Denise Mina
The Invitation by Lucy Foley
The Divinities by Parker Bilal
I'd like to dip into:
Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld
Summer Half by Angela Thirkell
Outsider by Linda Castillo
The House of Brides by Jane Cockram
The Vexations by Caitlin Horrocks
And there are some audiobooks, too....
Phantom Terror by Adam Zamoyski
Vagabond by Bernard Cornwell
The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi
These Women by Ivy Pochoda

Good day, everyone - happy Friday!
As I have for the last few weekends, I'll start my tracking at noon today (which is just about now) and continue through the holiday Monday. I'm part way through a reread of Friday by Robert A. Heinlein so I'll finish that first. After that, who knows?

I had originally planned on spending today reading, but I could not focus on a book this morning so gave up and started watching Season 2 of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. I need to get up and move around a bit, after which I'll try to read Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo and if sitting down with a book isn't working for me, I've got an audiobook of Provenance by Ann Leckie ready to go while I knit.

I'll be reading, too. I plan to intersperse reading with household and outside chores.
I just finished a short story called Andaki by Kinyanjui Kombani in my LTER book Nairobi Noir. I hope to finish this and get it reviewed this weekend.
I also be reading Malcom Gladwell's Talking to Strangers for my RLBC (via zoom) next week and All Systems Red: The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells.
Where did the month go? I have several more challenge books I want to read yet, besides the above.

>40 avatiakh: I really enjoyed the previous two novels by Tsiolkas that I read, although both are disturbing in different ways. If you like to relate to a sympathetic character, probably NOT a good pick. I think I first read them when The Slap was up for the Man Booker prize, several years ago.
My first update, a roundup of a slow start to the readathon. It's nearly 11 p.m. in Rhode Island:
Books read from: I gravitated to a "re-listen" of Dominion by C.J. Sansom. Also read some of Double Agent by Tom Bradby.
Books finished: none
Reading time: About 4 hours
Snacks: Chicken pot pie for dinner; some selzer and diet Pepsi
Thoughts: Worrying about where my freelance check is; I'm counting on it for rent etc. Should have been here last week, but it wasn't mailed until Monday. Which means it should have arrived today -- but it didn't. So, I'm anxious.
Non-book activities: Dealing with issues with my father; talked to my ex-sister in law about this today. She's worried that the side-effects of the Parkinson's meds are causing some serious problems. My father is in denial, and it's all complicated. A prolonged nap; sigh.

>52 Carmenere: You're welcome! Masks are a topic of universal interest these days. I was sitting in the parking lot at the vet's office and got a call from my vet with a treatment related question. While waiting for an x-ray we kept talking and he proceeded to tell me where to purchase masks (medical grade, actually) and hand sanitizer locally.

Saturday morning check-in:
Time: 08:49 in the UK
Books read from: L'invitée by Simone de Beauvoir, Spring Flowers, Spring Frost by Ismail Kadare
Books finished: 0
Pages read: 35
Thoughts: Well, my plan was to finish all three books I had on the go before starting a new one, but after finishing this She Came to Stay yesterday, I had the urge to revisit the original book by this name. Or, rather, to read it in French for the first time. Which will probably take me ages. Oh well.
Non-book activities: just sleeping, then waking and drinking coffee so far. I'm still feeling sleepy, so will give up on reading more right now and try to get up and shake off the sleepiness.

>67 susanna.fraser: Well, I've been doing a LOT of re-reading this month, as well as turning to a lot of audiobooks. In the first case, I think it's about comfort reading; in the second, it's about not being able to actually read when I have a migraine. (The two are related, since a "re-read" of an audiobook by a great narrator is comforting and I don't worry about where I am in the story, because I can always find my place again if I lose track of it.)

I also viewed 10 playwrights reading their commissioned scripts on Vimeo- there are three segments put on by the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto- I viewed two segments- I'll look at the third some time tomorrow.
I also " viewed " my garden- I have a lot of dead wood to take out of bushes in my backyard.

Books read from: Provenance by Ann Leckie

Thoughts: For this morning, I can't quite decide what to read and might try a comfort reread of 84, Charing Cross Road before making any real decisions. There's nothing pressing on my plate today, so after (virtual) church I should be able to relax however I decide to.

Gave up on a bad day for sunshine and picked up a great deliverance, 1st in the Linley/Havers detective series by Elizabeth George. Loving this one.
Time out to watch TITANIC and to write postcards for postcrosssing.com - an interesting activity during these homebound days.

Sunday's reading from Chicago:
Books read from: 2: Mansfield Park: an annotated edition and The Time Traveler's Wife, Niffenegger
Books finished:1 Mansfield Park
Time reading: 4 hours
Non-reading activities: finished cataloging my son's books that have been in boxes here for 15 years (he lives in England); pulled out the fans, since it hit the 80s here.
Thoughts: Good to re-visit Mansfield Park and get a different perspective; read 60+ pages of The Time Traveler's Wife and it's not for me, I'm afraid. Not sure I can force myself to read any more, even with all the Chicago bits thrown in.

It is 10:00 a.m. CDT check in on Monday in Alabama USA.
Books planned to read from this weekend: On audio Sea of Gold: The Reader by Traci Chee and Aeronauts Windlass by Jim Butcher. I also hope to read a bit of my children's book that I am slowly working through Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer. Dead at Daybreak my latest South African spy thriller by Deon Meyer and I want to finish up the Bobiverse books with book 3 All These Worlds by Dennis E. Taylor. My short book this weekend was An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good by the Swedish author Helene Tursten
Books finished this weekend so far: 3 - I finished reading my short book while eating breakfast on the patio An Elderly Lady Is Up To No Good by Helene Tursten and found myself smiling while reading this murder mystery short story book. I finished listening to the audio version of Sea of Ink and Gold: The Reader by Traci Chee. On Sunday I finished the last of the Deon Meyer books I have in my house - Dead At Daybreak.
Time reading on Sunday night: 3 hours
Time posting:
Snacks:
Thoughts: This morning I went to Starbucks for a cappuccino and got a latte. I should have take it back and insisted on a cappuccino but I was already down the street and didn't think it worth it to go back. I don't like latte's. They are too sweet for me. I then planted my last elephant ear/taro plant for the year and boy howdy! It's hot out there. I will spend the rest of the day reading. I am done planting except for one hole that needs to be filled. I need to go purchase one white caladium and then I am done.
Non book activities: Spent Saturday night and Sunday with my niece and sister. Since Tennessee is no longer under quarantine, (If it ever was?) I drove up to the Tennessee state line on Saturday and we spent the night at a bed and breakfast that we rented. We went antiquing in Columbia, Tennessee and I purchased a couple of old mirrors for my bedroom. I drove home yesterday and enjoyed my first outing in two months.

I finished To End All Wars A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918 by Adam Hochschild- it is excellent! Maybe now I can return to fiction.
I have to go and pick up a new ink cartridge for my printer. I have arranged " curbside pickup"
There are two interesting webinars I am seeing later in the afternoon.
The weather? very hot today and for the next two days.

Missed my evening check-in yesterday as my laptop battery died, and by the time it recharged, I was asleep!
It's 1:46 p.m. in Rhode Island
Books read from: Rebel Cinderella by Adam Hochschild, The Hour of the Assassin by Matthew Quirk, Excellent Women by Barbara Pym, Winter in Madrid by C.J. Sansom, The Overstory by Richard POwers
Books finished this period: 2 (the Barbara Pym novel and the thriller by Matthew Quirk, which was entertaining in that it's loosely based on recent DC events -- no spoilers -- but done as a suspense instead of action thriller, it would have been better.)
Reading time: 12 hours
Snacks: About to eat some eggs benedict, picked up from just reopened diner.
Thoughts: Still stressed out. Will not be "reactivated" for my retail job as my intermittent fever and chronic cough disqualified me. Not sorry, I confess.
Non-book activities: Had to run around looking for USB C cord to recharge my phone as the existing one stopped working and I had no backup. Went for walk and picked up brunch. Dealing with migraine, but not as severe as it was pre-Aimovig. Last night watched one more episode of "Medici" on Netflix, which may help to explain the migraine (in addition to low pressure/forecast for rain here).

Mid-afternoon on a rainy Memorial Day in Seattle:
Books read from: Broken Homes (a re-read), Body Work

Time reading: 6 hours, give or take
Food: pizza
Thoughts: Rivers of London works well as a graphic novel, though none of the characters look like I've been imagining them. Books read from: Rebel Cinderella by Adam Hochschild, Winter in Madrid by C.J. Sansom, and North From Rome by Helen MacInnes
Books finished this period: none
Reading time: 4.5 hours
Snacks: More ham sandwiches for dinner tonight. Ho hum.

Non-book activities: Two-hour nap was a relief, and put paid to the migraine, thankfully. Listening to everybody set off fireworks. Was on FB for a few minutes

I should finish the new Hochschild book tonight. It's fascinating, dealing with the socialists of the pre-WW1 era in NYC (think, Max Eastman, John Reed, etc. as background characters) and focuses on someone I had never even heard of before starting to read, Rose Pastor Stokes. If I wrap this up, that would make this a successful weekend of reading, even if much of it was on audiobooks and even though I accomplished little/nothing else.

Publishers Weekly has reported that sales of dystopian literature have been falling since March, while sales of historical fiction is going up. I think that Chatterbox nailed it earlier when she said that people are finding safety in the past. And here I am reading spy thrillers, murder mysteries, and Sci/Fi. I must be on a different planet.

It is 10:30 p.m. CDT check in on Monday in Alabama USA.
Books planned to read from this weekend: On audio Sea of Gold: The Reader by Traci Chee and Aeronauts Windlass by Jim Butcher. I also hope to read a bit of my children's book that I am slowly working through Sea of Trolls by reading a few pages a day. Dead at Daybreak my latest South African spy thriller by Deon Meyer and I want to finish up the Bobiverse books with book 3 All These Worlds by Dennis E. Taylor and read 35 pages in this book today. My novella this weekend was actually a book of short terse murder mysteries by the Swedish author Helene Tursten. An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good turned out to be good fun.
Books finished this weekend so far: 3 - I finished reading my short book/novella while eating breakfast on the patio An Elderly Lady Is Up To No Good by Helene Tursten and found myself smiling while reading this murder mystery short story book. I finished listening to the audio version of book 1 The Reader, in the Sea of Ink and Gold trilogy by Traci Chee. On Sunday I finished the last of the Deon Meyer books I have in my house - Dead At Daybreak. It was a successful reading weekend.

Thoughts: Nursery was closed so I went to a used bookstore instead. Amazing I found a book that I thought I would not be able to get until the library reopens in June because I was going to have to place and ILL request for it - Buried Angels by Camilla Lackberg was right there on a shelf, so I nabbed it! Can't believe my luck.
Non book activities: planted one plant this morning. talked on the phone to a friend and went grocery shopping.
Total books finished since I started doing the social distancing readathon on the weekend of April 4, 2020: 24
Total read from since April 4, 2020: 33
Total time reading for Readathon: 74 hours

Technically I am still at home because the University is not opened. Even though Alabama is no longer under quarantine rules I am going to play things close to home for the time being. If you do this one more weekend I will participate.

>135 benitastrnad: Yeah, I think I might be from the same planet as you Benita. If I look back at my reading this year (especially March on), the majority author-wise has probably been Isaac Asimov, Stephen King and Martha Wells (all hail the Murderbot) :)
