Still reading Dark Tomorrow by Reece Hirsch.

Am a little more than 1/2 through Cartwheel by Jennifer Dubois who is becoming a favorite writer.

Mystery of the Dead Police by Philip MacDonald. One of my favorite authors, a great storyteller.

Finished Dark Tomorrow by Reece Hirsch. It was OK. Added Don't Make a Sound by T. R. Ragan to my rotation.

Next up in crime for me is The Colour of Murder, by Julian Symons.

I'm reading leave the grave green, a Duncan Kincaid mystery by Deborah Crombie.

Love the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James series.

Almost finished with The Tuscan Child by Rhys Bowen. It's very much a departure from Her Royal Spyness cozy series, but an excellent detour!

Finished Don't Make a Sound by T. R. Ragan. Added Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovitch to my rotation.

Night Rounds by Helene Tursten. I'm hoping it won't be too dark. I usually avoid Scandinavian mysteries.

Finished Moon Over Soho. Meh.

Dallying with an author new to me: Emily Dickinson is Dead by Jane Langton. Recommended years ago by a dear friend and mentor, but hadn't actively hunted her down...this was a serendipity find on the 25-cent "please just make it go away" shelf at local used bookstore.

Picking up a light mystery: Murder Unprompted, by Simon Brett.

Started The Poe Shadow the other day. A little historical mystery for a change of pace.

Continuing the light-mystery groove with The Christmas Card Crime and Other Stories, a British Library Crime Classics collection edited by Martin Edwards. It seems strange to be reading about Christmas in the middle of a heat warning, but this is when the hold came in on the ebook!

And another British Library Crime Classic that I'm reading via Overdrive: The Body in the Dumb River, by George Bellairs. We're still under a heat warning today, so light mysteries are going to be my go-to for the next little while.

Slow going at the start, but glad I perservered: Death by Water by Torkil Damhaug-Nordic crime fiction.

This is the third entry into a series about Constance Kopp, the first female Under Sheriff in the U.S. It is based upon real characters and incidents, but fictionalized. Deputy Kopp is facing changes as Sheriff Heath, ty he man who hired her, was running for Congress since his tenure as sheriff was about over. The man running for sheriff is a prosecuting attorney with no experience in law enforcement. He also had no use for a female deputy. Constance's younger sister (actually Constance's daughter) works as a seamstress designing costumes for movies. The older sister Norma runs the family farm and is obsessed with carrier pigeons. This story was slow paced and did not hold my attention well. I'm not sure if I eill read the next installment.

Melanie Stokes had a secret, one that even she was not sure of. She was an orphan, adopted by the wealthy Beacon Hill Stokes family. Her father was a renowned cardiac surgeon, her mother a socialite, and her brother also a doctor. She began having flashes of memories and terrible migraines. It all seemed to be bits and pieces of her unknown past. Who was Melanie? Was she just a Jane Doe orphan adopted by the Stokes family five years after their daughter had been kidnapped and murdered? And why is the FBI circling around her fsmily?

I hadn't read a real murder mystery in some time. This was one of author Lisa Gardner's earlier works, but it held together quite well 20 years later. It was a nice taut thriller and mystery. It kept me turning the pages until the very end.
