Any thoughts on the drive by and Sylvia’s reaction to it? Why did Harry not want mentioned the book the victim was reading when shot?

That’s sad but unfortunately happens all too often. I think Sylivia’s grief seemed to be a little too much - maybe she was overreacting because of everything else that’s going on too. I thought Harry was overly cautious about not wanting the book mentioned - it wasn’t like Beatrice was killed because she was sitting on the couch reading, she could have been sitting on the couch watching tv or playing with the kids just as easily. It was a drive by with no warning.

I also didn't understand the thing about the book. This was a child. Why would she be reading Locke's book? I think they will find that she was a mistake. She has brothers that cold have been the targets. It was a sad and unfortunate event. >2 bhabeck: is correct. It seemed that Sylvia was too emotional over this. She should certainly care but it seemed too much.

>3 Carol420: She wasn't reading Locke's book - Beatrice was reading The Big Sleep which was the reading assignment that Sylvia gave her class.

>4 bhabeck: Ahhh...well now I feel better that the kid wasn't reading about serial killers.

It is so sad. What makes it even more tragic is that her brothers are to blame on this. Had they not been dealing drugs, the house more than likely would not have been shot at. That was her prize pupil. Of course she is going to be upset. She had been telling Harry how much she thought of her work and that she would go far some day. Now that's not going to happen. I don't have a clue about not mentioning the book she was reading. I don't know what it matters.

I think Sylvia had been expecting a bad thing to happen to her star pupil for some time. This didn't make it any easier for her when it did come to pass.
I felt Bosch didn't want the book mentioned simply because Sylvia might focus on the fact she'd set the book, maybe blame herself in some way for the girl's death.

I agree with all of you.
