The Lifted Veil, Women’s 19th. Century Stories 2005

The rather provocative title of this substantial 498 + xvii page tome introduces a book that contains twelve very different short (and not so short) stories The only thing that connects them is that they were all written by women between 1800 and 1900.

The stories vary from the soppy to the eerie. Some are exasperatingly slow moving (I’m looking at you, Jane Austen), to the faster paced (eg. Marry Shelley’s Maurice). The authors include the well known (Louisa May Alcott, Elisabeth Gaskell) to the obscure (to me anyway eg. Olive Schreiner, Charlotte Mew). Amongst the stories there is probably something for everyone, but also some that you will skip after a few pages.

The book is illustrated with twelve watercolours by Peter Suart, being one for each story. There is a nine page introduction by Kathryn Hughes. The endpapers and slipcase (26.2x18.6cm.) are dark blue, and the book is bound in red cloth blocked on cover and spine with a picture and design in gilt, black and white.
